William Lee (Bill) Hale

BLAND, Va. — Born October 24, 1929 in Roanoke, Virginia, Bill was one of four children of the late Archie and Alva Hale.

Bill grew up in Floyd, Virginia, graduated from Floyd High School and began his career as a coal truck driver in the coal fields of southern Virginia. Working hard over the years, Bill came to own several coal companies (both surface mining and deep mining); a charter flight service with two planes; several commercial fishing boats; and was one of the seven original shareholders and former CEO of 1st Sentinel Bank. He also invested in and truly enjoyed black Angus cattle. And Bill loved panning for gold as a past time. “Oh, we had great times doing that down in North Carolina,” said his wife, Dianne, “but he spent his time talking with everyone else instead of really panning and he’d have to buy a nugget in a gift shop so we could go home with some!”

Bill traveled a lot, met and made many friends. He liked people and loved talking, asking questions, and listening to other folks’ stories. For the past 10 years, Bill and Dianne have wintered in the Tampa, Florida area, but always came back home to Virginia for spring, summer and hay bailing! When he realized his time was short, he wanted nothing more than to come home to Virginia. God granted him his prayer.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Eugenia Sisson and Glendola Howery; and one son, William E. (Butch) Hale.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Dianne Hale of the home; one son, Bobby Hale and wife Pam of Saltville, VA; one sister, Iva May Ray of Richmond, VA; two stepsons: William E. (Bill) Davis and wife Angela of Welch, WV, and Brian Davis of Willis, VA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: William E. (Billy) Hale, II, wife, Eloise and son William (Mac) Hale of Charlotte, NC; Sheri L. Hale of Richlands, VA; Suzanne Pate and husband Shane of Leeds, AL and daughter Jordan of Richlands, VA; Robin Murphy, husband Derrick and sons Kegan and Liam of Johnson City, TN; and Christopher, Hope, Ethan, and Kellan Davis all of Welch, WV. Also surviving is Wilma R. Shreve Hale, mother of his sons; and several nieces and nephews, extended family and special friends. Little Ella Jane Michael was Bill’s very special “Angus Buddy". And Haley Kate Jenkins, his namesake, was his special granddaughter and as Bill always said, “the Sunshine of My Life".

Singleton Funeral Service of Cedar Bluff, VA will be serving the family where they will meet on Thursday morning from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Friends may call from noon until the service begins at 2:00 p.m. Pastor John Green will officiate. Afterwards, Bill will be entombed at Greenhills Memory Gardens also in Cedar Bluff, near his son Butch. Pallbearers will be friends and relatives.
