Lillian Gertrude (Akers) Bishop

RALEIGH, N.C. — Lillian Gertrude Bishop, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2012 at Falls River Court Assisted Living Facility in Raleigh, N.C. Lillian was born on July 4, 1921 and raised in Mercer County. She was the eldest of five children born to the late W. E. and Lala Akers, also of Mercer County.

Lillian graduated from Matoaka High School in Mercer County in 1940 and worked as a beautician until she married. Lillian married her high school sweetheart, Herbert H. Bishop, CWO4, (retired), and was a Navy wife for 25 years. Lillian and Herbert and family traveled to many duty stations around the world during their 25 year Navy life, including Tokyo, Japan, Morocco, North Africa, London, England, San Francisco, California, Norfolk, Va., and many years in Washington, D.C. After retirement in 1970, they moved to Roanoke, Va. where they lived for 35 years until Herbert's passing in 2005. Lillian continued to enjoy vacation traveling in favorite places in Maine and the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Lillian loved flower gardening, and was a wonderful cook who prepared a countless number of delicious meals for her family and friends. Her chocolate cakes were always a family favorite. She spent many hours enjoying her sewing, knitting, and quilting hobbies, as well. She also enjoyed listening to “Big Band” and country and western swing dance music. Lillian loved nothing more than spending time and laughing with her family, and reminiscing with hometown family and friends. She and beloved husband Herbert were married for over 61 years.

Lillian will forever be dearly remembered by her devoted brothers, Trevor Akers of Troy, OH and David Akers of Ripley; her children, John Bishop of Raleigh, N.C., and Faith (Bishop) Conger of Haymarket, Va.;  treasured grandchildren, Hoye Emily Ariza Bishop of Seville, Spain, James Conger of Haymarket, Va., and Katie (Conger) McKee of Durham, N.C.; and other friends and family who were blessed to know her.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Claire (Akers) Bailey and Jeanne (Akers) Calvert.

Lillian touched the lives of many people with her honesty and generosity, and maintained her delightful sense of humor all the way to the end.

There will be a visitation in Roanoke, Va. from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today (Friday), Dec. 7, 2012, at Oakey's North Chapel at 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA.  Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at noon at Sunset Cemetery, North Franklin Street, Christiansburg, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph Street, suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.
