Dorothy Yurkovich Kozar

GARY — Dorothy Yurkovich Kozar, 80, of Gary, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Charleston Area Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born December 9, 1932 in Gary, W.Va., Dorothy was the youngest child of the late Matt and Cecilia Herlovich Yurkovich and the last surviving member of her immediate family. A 1951 graduate of Gary High School, she worked as a billing clerk and in several other positions at the Stevens Clinic and Doctors Memorial hospitals in Welch. Later she was employed as a kindergarten aide at Gary Elementary School and as a dental hygienist at the Tug River Health Clinic in Gary.

Dorothy was a devoted lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Gary, where she served as a lector reading the Word of God during Mass and a longtime member of the Ladies' Altar Society. A loving mother to her children, fun-loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, and beloved “Nanny” to her grandchildren, Dorothy had a generous spirit and a lively, entertaining personality. She was also a talented Gardener who grew beautiful plants and flowers that graced her home and neighborhood.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Kozar, who was killed in a coal mining accident in 1968; Brothers Frank, John, and Matt Yurkovich; and Sisters Rose Yurkovich, Annie Yurkovich, Mary Svetlecic, Helen Yurkovich, Cecelia Herlovich, and Katie Corak.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Mark Kozar and his wife Lucretia, of Alum Creek, W.Va.; daughter, Julie Hicks and her husband Jerry of Elbert; grandchildren, John Henry Hargis and Holly Hicks; and a host of nieces and nephews.
