Dennis Ray Perdue

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Dennis Ray Perdue, 72, passed away Sunday, June, 16, 2013 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was born and raised in Premier, McDowell County, West Virginia and was proud of that. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margie Worrell Perdue and Dennis Whitten Perdue.

Dennis was a 1958 graduate of Welch High School where he was a three sport star athlete. He attended and graduated from Concord College at which he attained the honor of all-conference in football and baseball. He taught science and coached at Gary High School for five years and during this time he was the assistant coach to Sid Cure  and they led the Coaldiggers to a state championship in football. After earning a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University he moved to south Florida and continued teaching and coaching.

His teaching and coaching career in Florida started at South Broward High School. At South Broward he was an assistant coach in football and coached the golf team for many years. He retired in 2000 but was called back to duty due to his science background and worked an additional 8  years at Cooper City High School teaching biology. He also coached golf there and was very successful. Dennis was also a very accomplished golfer. He has in his trophy case a City of Hollywood  Men's Championship trophy as well as 4 (or is it 5) runner-up statues. He has had 10 holes-in-one. In the golf community of Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale he is a legend. He and his best friend, Bernie Hamrick started the "Big Jack" tournament that has been ongoing for 30 years and his golf contacts are numerous.

Dennis is survived by his daughter Kim, her husband Steve, and the twin lights of Dennis' life, his grandsons, Anthony and Tommy Palmieri all of Plantation, Florida, his best friend for more than twenty years, Beverly James of Ft. Lauderdale, his sister Mary Beth Rivers and her husband H.J. of Silver Springs, Florida, a brother Jay and his wife Mary Kathryn of Bluefield, Virginia, a niece, Carrie Perdue of Cambridge, Massachusetts, nephews, Jason Perdue of Arlington, Virginia and Bryan Rivers of Pleasanton, California and his very special aunt Josie Jones of Welch.

Dennis asked that there be no funeral or other formal services. His hope was that his friends would gather at some point and enjoy each other. That gathering will be in mid-July in Hollywood, Florida with the date to be determined. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Welch.
