Burgie Lee Yates Charles Maturi

GRUNDY, Va. — Burgie Lee Yates Charles Maturi, 83 years of age, of Grundy, Va., went to be with her Lord, Thursday, June 13, 2013 at her home. Born December 24, 1929 in Grundy, Va. she was the daughter of the late Stewart and Ora Childress Yates.

Burgie loved to cross stitch and with her green thumb she loved to garden, she was a member of the Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church for 64 years. Her church and faith were her inspiration for life and to everyone who knew her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.

In addition to her parents, Stewart and Ora Childress Yates, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Simmie Charles, her second husband, John Maturi, brothers, Elster, Gene, and Richard Yates, sons-in-law, Gary Slone and Ronald Hackney.

Survivors include her daughters, Shelia Owens and husband Olen Sr of Grundy, Va., Leatta Slone of Bluefield, Va., Alice Hackney of Grundy, Va.; sons, Simmie Dean Charles and wife Shelley of Wytheville, Va., Robert (Bobby) Charles and wife Connie of Bluefield, W.Va.; sister, Inez Endicott of Grundy, Va.

She is also survived by ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, special friend and caregiver, Judy Elswick.

Funeral services for Burgie Lee Yates Charles Maturi will be conducted at Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church, Vansant, Va., Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Elders Jeffery Arnold and Keith Bower officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Virginia.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Employees of Legacy Hospice, Richlands, Va.

The family will receive friends at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, Va., Saturday, June 15, 2013 after 6:00 p.m. with evening services at 7:00 p.m.

The body will be moved to the Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church at Vansant, Va. Sunday for the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
