Ernest Roland Boyd Jr.

MARTINSBURG — The ashes of Ernest Roland Boyd Jr. will be interred June 29, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Green Hill Cemetery in Union.

Often called "Jody" by his friends, he died at the age of 82 on February 23, 2004 in Martinsburg, West Virginia at the Veterans Nursing Home after a thirty-eight year disability. He worked for the Navy in the Military Sea Transport Service for two years during the troop and supply buildup prior to U.S. involvement in Vietnam and contracted an undiagnosable illness while in the Pacific theater, on board the USS General Maurice Rose in 1966.

Ernest was born in Union on January 11, 1922 and was graduated from Union High School, playing on the six-man football team that took the Southern West Virginia championship in 1939. A WW II veteran, Ernest left Union to join the Navy and served on active duty for six years. He was on the USS Phoenix in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed in 1941, but was unharmed by the attack. Jody attended Morris-Harvey College following his Honorable Discharge from the Navy.

His two sisters, Elizabeth Rutter Pugh and Jo-Ann Caudill, predeceased him.

He has two brothers living in Bluefield, Roy Lee Boyd and Charles E. Boyd. Ernest was previously married to Freda Love. She died in December of 2012. His daughter, Dacy Boyd, and her husband, Maurice Wright, live in Pennsylvania. His granddaughter, Ruth Boyd-Galezewski, also resides in Pennsylvania and his grandson, Griffin Wright, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He is a descendent of the pioneer Davidson family of Mercer County, West Virginia whose log house is located in the Bluefield City Park. Ernest grew up in the historic, Davidson House at 216 South Street in Union which continues to stay in the family, known today as the Higginbotham House.

His ashes will be returned to his boyhood home on June 23 and will be interred June 29, between the graves of his mother, Isabel Davidson Boyd, and his grandmother, Mary Ann Davidson in Green Hill Cemetery. The Reverend Walter Ellison will lead the service.

Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home of Union is in charge of arrangements. All are welcome.
