GRUNDY, Va —
D.J. Gelentser III, 24 years of age, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 as a result of a mining accident in Buchanan County, Virginia. Born November 21, 1989 in Queens, NY, he was the son of Arthur David Gelentser, Jr. of Oakwood, VA and Margaret Lynn O’Keefe Thornton of Oakwood, VA.
D.J. was a 2008 graduate of Grundy Senior High School where he played on the basketball team and was a member of the Cross Country team. He attended Tookland Pentecostal Church where he was a member of the Drama team, was an employee of Jewell Coal Suncoke Energy, enjoyed basketball, riding dirt bikes and was an avid outdoorsman. A loving son, husband and father to his little girls.
He was preceded in death by his sister Thersa Gelentser, paternal grandfather Arthur David Gelentser, Sr. and maternal grandfather Richard John O’Keefe.
Survivors in addition to his father Arthur David Gelentser, Jr. of Oakwood, VA and mother and father Margaret Lynn O’Keefe Thornton and Fred Thornton of Grundy, VA, include his loving wife Latisha Amber Ward Gelentser of Grundy, VA; daughters MaKaylee Alexis Gelentser and Kylee Jazmine Gelentser of the home; sisters Lisa Gelentser, Heather (Matthew) Street, Samantha (John) Ramey, Deanna Thornton all of Grundy, VA; brother Dan Gelentser of Trinton, NJ.
He is also survived by his paternal grandmother Phyllis Gelentser of NJ and maternal grandmother Edith O’Keefe of Oakwood, VA; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for D.J. Gelentser III will be conducted at Tookland Pentecostal Church, Tookland, VA, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Wade McGeorge and Minister Rusty Comfort officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA;
Active pallbearers will be Bobby Peck, Cody Stiltner, Cody Parnell, Joe Hess, K.J. Harris, Jimmy Thornsbury, Nick Taylor and Chris Sanabria.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Gelentser, Dan Gelentser, Fred Thornton, Mike Sanabria, Dewey Sizemore, Matt Street, John Ramey and Charles (Chucky) Auville.
The family will receive friends at the Tookland Pentecostal Church, Monday, February 24, 2014 after 6:00 p.m. with evening services to be held at 7:00 p.m.
