Susan Cooper Snyder

PRINCETON — Susan Brereton Cooper Snyder, 66, of 101 Greenback Avenue in Princeton died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at The Maples in Bluefield after a long battle with heart problems. Born March 4, 1947 in Bluefield she was the daughter of the late William Y. Cooper and Emaline Eck Cooper. She was the great great granddaughter of the late John Cooper, the coal baron from Coopers, WV with interests in the Mill Creek Coal Company and other mining ventures.

Susan was a 1965 graduate of Bluefield High School, attended Bluefield College, Palmer College, and the Berlitz School of Languages. She lived in Germany in the late 60s and traveled over Europe working as a photographer for the U.S. Armed Forces. She and her husband Carl owned a tile business in Florida before retiring back to Princeton.

Susan was a member of the Scuba Diver's Association, National Historical Society, Thespian Association, Red Hat Ladies Society, Mercer County Historical Society (where she had many friends), and served on the 1965 High School Reunion Committee. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Bluefield Historical Society, Board of Directors of the Bluefield Historical Landmark Commission, Secretary of the Mercer County Spay Association, served on Board of Directors of the Clay Foundation, served and on the committee to “Save the Ridge Runner”, and was Past President of the Friends of Liberty in Bluefield. She also volunteered for the Bluefield Coal Show, with the Coal Heritage and the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce. Susan helped raise money and awareness with Kitty Woolridge in building the Mercer County Animal Shelter.

She loved to laugh, lived her life to the fullest enjoying every bit, gave of herself whenever and wherever she was needed, and loved the Lord with all her heart.

Survivors include her husband of forty-three years, Carl Edward Snyder of Princeton; one sister, Dodson Cooper Ambrose of Charlotte, NC; one brother, William “W.T.” Cooper of Charlotte, NC; and one nephew, Pvt. Thomas Cooper stationed in Ft. Benning, GA.

In keeping with Susan's wishes her body has been cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Minister Kermit Fowler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to assist the family may be made to Carl Snyder.
