WINCHESTER, Va. — Arnold Junior Shortt, age 87, of Winchester, Virginia, formerly of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 in Winchester, Virginia.

Mr. Shortt was born October 25, 1926 in Buchanan County, Virginia to the late Floyd and Mandy Whitt Shortt. He worked as a coal miner for 14 years, served as a sergeant in the Army, followed by many years as a commercial drywall contractor in Washington, DC.

He was married to Janie Lee Osborne in 1957 until her death in 1991. In retirement, he enjoyed church, gardening, his dogs and his grandchildren. After the death of his wife, Mr. Shortt moved back to Richlands for 13 years. Eight years ago, Mr. Shortt moved back to the DC area to be with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Pearl Blankenship, Grace Bucklen, and Rose Arwood; three brothers, Earl, Vervie, and Ervin Shortt, and two infant siblings, Bella and Velvie Shortt.  

Survivors are: Daughter, Joan Cheney of Aberdeen, MD. Sons: Brian Keith Shortt of Frederick, MD, Dale Shortt of Cross Junction, VA. Sister: Gertie Reba Mosley of Richlands, Virginia. Six grandchildren and two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.  

Funeral services for Arnold Junior Shortt will be conducted Monday, February 17, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Arvil Arwood, Rev. Phillip Horton, and Rev. Bob Osborne officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call after 6:00 pm Sunday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia.
