Sylvia Ellen Akers

KING, N.C. — Sylvia was born in Bluefield, WV to the late Martha Kathleen and Roosevelt “Buck” Akers on December 4, 1935.

She lived in Charleston, WV for 49 years before moving to King. She worked at Bell Telephone Company for 27 years and retired in December 1992. She was an honorary life member of the Communication Workers in America, and also Pioneers, a volunteer network. She loved sports, and played softball and basketball, and she was named All-State softball player.

Sylvia was a very kind, caring, and giving person with a keen sense of humor. She loved her family, and her pride and joy were her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She always remembered their birthdays and Christmas. One of her most valuable treasures in life were her friends, who often became her family while she was living in Charleston.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margie Willis and her husband, Roy; and niece, Sherry Witt Dobbins.

We remember our dear Sylvia with loving memories and she will be missed.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita “Ricki” Sproles and her husband Ralph of King, NC, and Wanda “Babe” Dickerson and her husband James of Martinsville, VA.

Sylvia was of the Christian Church faith.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, WV with Reverend Ralph Sproles and Reverend Doctor James Dickerson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 AM until the service hour.
