Garland Blaine (G.B.) Gent

LEBANON, Va. — Garland was born in Russell County, Va., on April 25, 1916, to the late John Henry and Cleo Cumbow Gent.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Glenna Faye Abshire Gent and his son, Jerry Lee Gent. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Ann Gent Olinger and husband Alvin, and Rita Kaye Gent Jessee and husband James, all of Lebanon. Survivors also include six grandsons, Staten Vanover of Black Mountain, N.C., John Vanover and wife Megan of Oak Harbor, Wash., Nathan Jessee and wife Kelly of Andrews AFB, Md., Benjamin Jessee and wife Sharon of Roanoke, Va., Doug Petrick and wife Jacqueline of Lebanon, and David Petrick and Danielle of Lebanon; six great-granddaughters, Glory and Grace Vanover, Kasey Beavers, Evelyn and Norah Jessee and Madison Petrick; and one great-grandson Riley Petrick.

G.B. was a veteran of World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions behind enemy lines on the Pacific Island of Leyte. Prior to his death, he was believed to be the oldest surviving WWII veteran in Russell County. He was a member of Church Hill United Methodist Church of Hansonville, Va., and Masonic Lodge 240 of Pocohantas, Va. Garland retired from Appalachian Power Company as line supervisor with 27 years of service. He served on the Russell County Electoral Board from 1986 until 1998.

Garland's grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Hassel Kegley, Leonard Kegley, David Kegley, and the men of Church Hill United Methodist.

Funeral services for Garland will be conducted at Church Hill United Methodist Church in Hansonville, on Friday, July 19, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Lyttle officiating. Interment will follow at Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon with military honors conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post #9864.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 18, after 6 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Masonic service conducted at 7 p.m.
