Nell Lucille Miller

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Born November 7, 1922, in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of William F. and Zoe M. Birkelbach. The family moved to Iaeger, WV, where she attended Iaeger High School, graduating in 1940. On November 9, 1942, she married Ensign Charles Goode Miller, USNR, and they traveled together during World War II. They returned to West Virginia and settled in Welch and lived there 29 years. Nell bore two daughters, Pamela Ann and Martha Jo. She was a member of Welch United Methodist Church and served as secretary there for 3 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. She also worked as a clerk at the McDowell County Board of Education in Welch for 11 years, retiring in 1974. In 1975 she and Charles retired to Harrisonburg, VA, where they lived in the Layman's Trestle area. Nell was a member of the Keezletown Extension Homemakers. She and Charles belonged to the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church for 7 years before moving to the city of Harrisonburg. There they joined the Asbury United Methodist Church. Nell engaged in social work, the Red Cross, United Methodist Women, achieving life membership in UMW. She enjoyed crocheting, travel, Christmas, her grandson and great-grandson, her friends, her church, and 70 wonderful years of life with Charlie.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Joseph Birkelbach, her sisters, Billie Walker and Betty Tarran, her son-in-law, Bob Swander, and her niece, Andrea Myers. She is survived by her husband, Charles G. Miller, of the home, daughters, Pamela A. Rose and husband Roger of Bluefield, VA, and Martha J. Swander of Charlotte, NC, grandson, James B. England and wife Allison of Plano, TX, great-grandson, Elliott A. England, of Plano, TX, and good friend and former son-in-law, James W. England, of Princeton, WV. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Nell Miller will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Dr. E. Thomas Murphy, Rev. Jerry John, and Rev. Stephen Hay. A private inurnment service will be held earlier. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Nell to either Asbury United Methodist Church, 205 S. Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA, 22801, or Rockingham Memorial Hospital, 2010 Health Campus Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
