NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — William Edward Hairston, Jr., of North Tazewell, VA, transitioned from this earthly life to his heavenly home December 2, 2013. Born October 23, 1948 in Welch, WV, he was a son of the late William Edward Hairston, Sr. and Jerrallean Henry Hairston.

William attended Excelsior and Big Creek High School. After graduating from Big Creek High he joined the military. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he worked a coal miner. Later, William worked for VDOT until his retirement. On January 21, 1972 he married Olie Mae Watkins and from that union was born three sons. He was a very kind, loving, and gentle spirit. One of his most enduring qualities was his capacity to love and put other's needs before his own, especially his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, William Edward Hairston III and Darrell Deshawan Hairston; two sisters, Jackie Hairston and Dreama Faye Shepherd; two brothers, Gerard Hairston and Mark Hairston.

He leaves to cherish fond memories: His wife, Olie Hairston of Charlotte, NC; one son, Michael Hairston and wife, Genica of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Katharine Simpson and husband, Louie of Cleveland, OH and Gloria Hairston of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Herschel Hairston and wife, Georgia of Bedford, VA; six grandchildren, Shacoya Hairston, Sherece Dennis, Shannon Hairston, Nehemiah Hairston, Michael Hairston, Jr. and Alliyah Hairston; William's very special companion of 18 years, Barbara Jordan of Tazewell, VA and her children, Emory Jordan and wife, Mosie, Shay Moore and wife, Catrina, Marshall Taylor and wife, Tonya, Jermaine Jordan, DJ Jordan, and Dorothy Taylor; thirty additional grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; close nephews, Carl Shepherd and wife, Laquetta, Tory Shepherd and wife, Valerie, Jamey Watkins and wife, Donna,  and Tonya Watkins; longtime cherished friend, John Patterson and his fishing buddy of many years, Herman Clements; a host of nieces, other nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend George Masterson and the Reverend Donnie Hairston officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens at Bluewell, WV. Nephews and other family will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 11 AM on Saturday.
