Dennis Ray Lawrence

LEWISBURG — Born January 6, 1952 in Princeton he was the son of Dorothy Blanche Howerton Lawrence of Weyanoke and the late Joseph Junior Lawrence. He was a 1970 graduate of Matoaka High School and a graduate of Beckley College with a degree in Paralegal Studies.

Dennis formerly worked for Eastern Coal Company and was the former owner and operator of A&S One Stop in Matoaka. He was also a paralegal for various law offices and a volunteer firefighter with the Matoaka Fire Department for numerous years. He attended the Lashmeet Church of God and the Weyanoke Church of God. Dennis was raised in Lamar and Weyanoke and had been a resident of Lewisburg since 2006 moving there from Weyanoke. He loved to fish, golf, and was an avid softball player. Dennis was a devoted WV Mountaineer fan and a proud supporter of the WV State Police.

He was preceded in death by his father and one infant sister, Wanda Gail Lawrence.

In addition to his mother, Dennis is survived by his companion, Marsha Stables of Lewisburg; two daughters, Cecelia “Sissy” Irene Lawrence Jessee and husband MSgt (retired) Rob Jessee of Goldsboro, NC, and Angie Denise Gillespie and husband Ben of Princeton; two grandsons, his “boys”, Steven Dennis Jessee and Todd Michael Jessee, both of Goldsboro, NC; one granddaughter, his “baby doll”, Savannah Hope Gillespie of Princeton; three brothers, Earl Franklin Lawrence and wife Leta of Lake Bottom, Ernest Alex Lawrence and wife Connie of Weyanoke, and Marvin Lawrence and wife Brenda of Blacksburg, SC; two sisters, Sue Poff and husband Calvin of Weyanoke and Peggy Matthews and husband Louis “Pete” of Lashmeet; several nieces and nephews; and numerous special friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 18, 2014 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Jerry Heaton and Pastor Margaret Holt officiating. Dennis will be escorted to his final resting place at Oakwood Park Cemetery in Princeton courtesy of the West Virginia State Police. Serving as pallbearers will be MSgt (retired) Rob Jessee, Ben Gillespie, Steven Jessee, Todd Jessee, Zeke Greer, and David Matthews. Honorary pallbearer will be Savannah Gillespie.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 17, 2014 (today). The family requests those attending the visitation and service wear West Virginia shirts in memory of Dennis.
