Mildred Louise Foster Stowers

PRINCETON — In the early morning hours of January 16, 2014, Mildred Louise Foster Stowers, gracefully passed away in her sleep at the age of 94.

Born on February 28, 1919 to the late Mary and Marion Foster, Mildred spent her childhood years in Rock, West Virginia before moving to Princeton in the late 1930s. As a graduate of Matoaka High School, she spent her early years with a close knit kinship to family and friends in this rural, yet once bustling, community. On Sunday afternoon drives throughout the years, she would often reflect to those times fondly, and would regularly share those memories with others from her 'days on the farm'.

After moving to Princeton, Mildred would travel to work as a bookkeeper at the Radford (Virginia) Arsenal to support the war efforts at the time while still finding the time to study and graduate from Bluefield Business College in 1947. In that same year, she would marry the love of her life, James W. “Bud” Stowers and changed employment to work as a Medical Secretary at Princeton Memorial Hospital. For years after that, she worked in partnership with her husband by serving as Office Manager at Bluefield Auto and Truck Service, and later National Trailer Convoy and Morgan Driveway Company.

Both she and Bud were active lifetime members at Kee Street United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer of Katy's Morning Circle. Mildred was a 4-H Leader of the 'Edgemont Topnotchers' for many years, and continued to instill her work ethic and the importance of 'lifetime skills' to everyone that she knew.

She will affectionately be remembered as “Ms. Thursday” at Four Season Pharmacy in Princeton, for on Thursday of each week, she and Bud would travel to Princeton to take care of their business.

Over the years, Mildred and Bud shared many special memories together and, up until the time of her passing, were inseparable. Through good times and bad, the two shared a bond that few can ever imagine. Married for 66 years, their love was to be admired and adored. As the sands of time continued to sift, they would still laugh and hold hands at church on Sunday mornings as if they were newlywed.

Although her health in the final days continued to deteriorate, her love for all of us kept the hearts of family and friends at ease. As her caregivers continued to watch over her, she received a final 'I love you' kiss goodnight from Bud earlier that evening and, within a few short hours, she passed on knowing how much she meant to all of us.

Mildred was survived by her husband, and two daughters: Sandra (John) Puckett, and Twila (Bob) Carr. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Ivan James Stowers.

She has four grandchildren, Greg Puckett, Jill Puckett, Amy Carr and Christa Carr and has two great grandchildren, Lauren Puckett and Joseph Puckett, as well as a host of special nephews and nieces.

Her extended family and caregivers, Teresa Wimmer, Bea Austin, Helen Moore, and Amedisys Hospice Care.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, that all donations go to the “Special Lunches Program” at Kee Street United Methodist Church (311 Kee Street, Princeton, WV 24740) in her honor.

Services to celebrate the life of Mildred Stowers will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 18, 2014 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastors Charles Shrewsbury and Ray Stonestreet officiating. She will be carried to her final resting place by members of the Kee Street United Methodist Church and her family at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Princeton.
