A lifelong resident of Narrows, he was born on June 7th, 1928 and was the son of the late Henry Dewey and Nora Ellen Simpkins Spangler. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ivalene Dalton Spangler; and a brother, Eugene Spangler.

Tom was involved in many endeavors prior to joining the former First National Bank of Narrows in 1963, later becoming Executive Vice-President of First Virginia Bankshares Corporation, and manager of its Narrows Branch. He treasured his relationships with many former and current bank employees. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows, which was an important part of his life. Tom was a member of Intermont Lodge No. 269 A.F.& A.M, Kazim Shrine Temple, the Narrows Kiwanis Club for over 50 years, and a major supporter of the Narrows Mill Dam renovation project in the late 1980s. He also served on many local and regional advisory boards. But more importantly, Tom had a genuine concern for his family, friends and neighbors.
