Lt. Col. Sidney S. Horton Jr. (USAF Ret.)

Stan

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — Stan was born March 16, 1937 in Bluefield, West Virginia. He was the son of Sidney and Gladys Horton and brother of the late Richard "Poss" Horton.

Stan is survived by his wife, Wanda Colvard Horton; Two sons Jon and Wade; Two daughters Adrianne and Catherine "Elizabeth” and his beloved grandchildren: Tremayne, Anna, Ashley, Daniel and Caden.

Stan attended Beaver High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI/VA Tech).  Stan graduated in 1960 with a degree in Business Administration, the same year as his brother Poss. He was a member of the German Club, Arnold Aid Society and West Minister Fellowship. He also spent many hours at the Tech Airport working and flying. Stan was Captain and Commander of Company "O" his senior year with the VPl Corps of Cadets. He received his AF commission as 2nd Lt. and entered the United States Air Force in 1960 along with his brother, and the two were able to complete flight training together in Laredo, Texas.

Stan went on to pilot a variety of aircraft including tankers, transport aircraft and bombers. Stan proudly flew the C-130 aircraft during the Vietnam War and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism delivering critical supplies and evacuating wounded personnel during the siege at Khe Sanh. Stan was part of a group that developed the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) which is a cargo delivery methodology still used by aircrews today. After transferring to the Strategic Air Command, Stan flew numerous missions in Vietnam as a pilot of a B-52 bomber. After the war, Stan was assigned to the nuclear alert force and was Vice-Commander of his air wing. During his career Stan was awarded the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Ready Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the Navy/Marine Presidential Unit Citation.

Stan retired from the Air Force in 1985 as a Lieutenant Colonel and began a well-deserved retirement where he pursued his philosophy to catch every fish, at least once. Stan eventually became the local go-to-guy for fishing advice. Along the way, Stan continued to pick his guitar and pluck his banjo and could even be seen on weekends picking with an impromptu jam session at a local flea market. He enjoyed playing at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Interment service will be held on June 23, 2014, at 10:30 am at Arlington National Cemetery where Stan had requested his remains be laid to rest along with his fellow serviceman.
