Mrs. Virginia Rejellian Clark-Hèbert

BLUEFIELD — Mrs. Virginia Clark-Hèbert, was born August 8, 1912 to Richard and Dora (Woody) Clark of Bluefield, West Virginia. On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, she passed on into the loving arms of the Lord and was re-united with her devoted husband, the late William Edward “Eddie” Hèbert .

Mrs. Hèbert attended the public school system in Mercer County and graduated Valedictorian from Genoa High School at the age of fifteen. She was the last graduate of her 1929 class. She received a BS Degree from Bluefield State College and a Masters Degree from Columbia University. Later she was a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Bluefield State College.

Mrs. Hèbert was a High School Math teacher at Genoa, Park Central and Bluefield High Schools and worked with the Upward Bound Program at Concord University. During her teaching career, she served at one time as treasurer of the Mercer County Teachers Association, being the first black officer in this association. She was an officer in the Mercer County Teachers Federal Credit Union and was a member in the NEA, WVEA and the AAUW.

She joined the Bluefield State College Alumni Association upon graduation and missed only ONE National meeting. She served as a member of the Bluefield State College Institutional Advisory Board for two terms, and she took pride in being a recipient of one of the very few Bluefield State College Medallions for outstanding service to the college.

Mrs. Hèbert served on the Board of Directors for “Bible in the School,” and was a life member in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., lifetime member of the NAACP and the local branch of the AARP, and a charter and platinum alumnae member of the The Southern West Virginia Chapter of The Links, Inc.

In 2009, Mrs. Hèbert was honored by Bluefield High School and placed in their Hall of Fame. She was a life member of Scott Street Baptist Church where she served as the former Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher and finance office worker. She was a member of the General Missionary Society, Pastor's Aid Society, The Helping Hand Circle, The Women of Destiny Auxiliary and was lovely given the title of “Mother” of the church.

Mrs. Hèbert was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Dora Clark, two sisters, Doreatha Clark-Glenn and Ernestine Clark-Simpson, and her husband, W.E. Hèbert, a retired professor at Bluefield State College.

Loved ones left to cherish her memory are her cousin, Alpha (Marvin) Smith, a niece Blanche and husband Eugene Skurnick of Englewood, NJ, a nephew Achille Jordan of Tucson, AZ., a niece Carol Summers, nephews Michael Hèbert, and Achille Hèbert all of Los Angeles, CA, cousins Denise (Gary) Hurt of Bluefield, Virginia, Linda Kay Jackson, Robert (Marion) Johnson, Ronald (Denise) Johnson, Leonard (Vera) Johnson all of Bluefield, West Virginia, Annetta (Larry) Ferguson of Nashua, NH, and Donald (Jean) Johnson of Lowell, MA, special  friends, Edna Thomas, Carolyn Williams, Ronnie Hamlin, her beloved pastor, Garry Moore and a host of nieces, nephews , cousins  and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Scott Street Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV, with the Reverend Garry D. Moore, Sr. officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Bluewell.
