Dewie M. Carter

PRINCETON — Dewie M. Carter, 85, of Sunrise Avenue, Princeton died suddenly Saturday morning, June 7, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born November 28, 1928, at Rock, he was the son of the late Charlie Albert Carter Sr. and Mary Underwood Carter.

Dewie was a veteran of the Korean conflict having served with the U.S. Army; he had received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal. For over 40 years, Dewie worked in the coal industry, having been a cutting machine operator working for Eastern Gas & Fuel at Herndon. He was a member of the UMWA.

Dewie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother who helped to raise him Eustacie Underwood, his stepmother, Lucille Vaughan Carter, siblings, Charlie A. Carter Jr. and Margaret C. Farmer.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy Mitchem Carter, two children, Deborah Mitchem and husband Charles “Mitch” of Princeton, Dewey Jeffrey Carter of Statesville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Samantha Ellison, Elizabeth Carter and Martha Mitchem; two great grandchildren, Jaxson Ellison and Jocelyn Russell. Darlene Sexton and husband Paul of Clintontownship, MI whom he helped to raise. Siblings, Charlene Vaughan of Rock, James Underwood of MO, Shirley Snider and husband Larry, Beulah Croy and husband Larry, Patsy Croy and husband Jim all of Princeton. A host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Ray Stonestreet officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with Military Honors given under the direction of the Mercer County Honor Guards.

Friends may visit with the family Monday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home.
