BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Born July 26, 1939 in Bluefield, WV, he was the oldest son of William Johnson and Juanita “Tommy” Fields Johnson. Howard was known to friends and family as “Poochie Fields”. He was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, retiring from the U.S. Army in 1981. He worked for the Town of Bluefield, VA as caretaker of Maple Hill Cemetery until he retired. After retiring, Howard was a long-time employee of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. He loved to stay busy and was the type of person who would help anyone.
A long-time resident of Bluefield, VA, he lived at 1008 Greever Avenue with his youngest daughter and her family. He loved his grandchildren with all his heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Lea Pruett and his daughter, Rhonda Lea Dalton.
Howard is survived by a son, Howard H. Pruett Jr. and his wife Sharon of Bluefield; daughters, Robin Reischer and husband John of Bluefield, Cory Short and husband Travis of Bluefield, VA; five grandkids, Amber Elswick of Greensboro, NC, Ashley Hill of Bluewell, WV, Issac Pruett, Ethan and Rhonda Short of Bluefield, VA; 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends who will miss him.
Services to celebrate Mr. Pruett’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Maple Hill Cemetery Chapel with VFW Post #9696 conducting Military graveside rites. Pastor Roger Cook will be the officiating minister. There will be no visitation. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Maple Hill Cemetery by 1:45 p.m.
