William Gregory "Greg" Akers

CHESAPEAKE — William Gregory "Greg" Akers, 45, of Chesapeake, WV went to sleep at Cabell Huntington Hospital and awoke in the arms of God on Saturday, November 2, 2013.

Greg was a longtime employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a transportation analyst in the planning division and for the past 18 years served in the environmental section of the engineering division. He was a member of Living Faith Church in Marmet. Greg was a 1986 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., and was a graduate of Concord University in Athens. He also attended West Virginia University in Morgantown and loved his Mountaineers. He loved his family, friends and co-workers and was often the life of the party with his contagious laugh and personality. Greg enjoyed fishing, skiing and traveling and developed a love of West Virginia History throughout his years.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leroy and Jacqueline Atkins Vickers; paternal grandparents, Dan and Elizabeth W. “Libby” Akers; uncle, Terry Vickers and stepmother, Jane Fowler Akers.

Greg was blessed in his lifetime to have three mothers: His birth mother, Sharon “Sherry” Vickers Akers of Charleston and two stepmothers who loved him as their own, Jane Fowler Akers who died December 27, 1993 and currently Patty Sue Akers of Princeton.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and stepmother, are his father, William J. “Bill” Akers of Princeton; step-grandmother, Bobbi Fowler of Morgantown; stepbrother and best friend, Mike White of Athens; brother, Bo Akers of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters, Kris Akers Adams and husband John of Waxhaw, N.C., and Katherine Akers Hidalgo and husband Oliver of Morgantown; stepbrothers, Alvin White and his wife Robin, Tony White and his wife Regina and Jimmy  White and his wife Telia, all of Princeton; uncle, Dan Akers and his wife Carolyn of Charlotte, N.C.;  several nieces and nephews and his extended family,  co-worker and good friend, Tim Sedosky, who was so kind and went above and beyond to help during Greg's illness and Penny Osborne of Christiansburg, VA.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Greg will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Bill Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Park Cemetery in Princeton. Friends may call at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 1:00 PM to the service hour on Sunday.
