BLUEFIELD — James "Mac" Oliver Sr., age 72, of 165 Pettrey Hill Road, (Sandlick) Bluefield, W.V. formerly of Brick Row, Keystone, W.V. departed this life early Saturday morning, October 5, 2013, at his residence after a sudden illness.
Born August 4, 1941 in Keystone, W.Va. he was the son of the late, James Dominic "Chief" Oliver and Maria "Mary" Antonia Rasi Oliver. He was a graduate of the Northfork-Elkhorn High School class of 1958 and attended Concord College (University) where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He was an owner of the old Mac's Drive Inn in Keystone, a popular thriving restaurant in McDowell County for over 30 years. He was a former member of the McDowell County Board of Education, and President of the Northfork High School Boosters Club. He was a former Town Manager for the City of Keystone, and was a former President of the Keystone Rotary. He was a member of the Princeton Elks Lodge #1459. He was a avid golfer and enjoyed playing with all the "Cuz's" He loved West Virginia Mountaineer Sports. Mac was a former boss at Keystone # 1 mines, and was a retired Federal Mine Inspector. He was currently employed by McDowell Supply Co. in Beckley, W.Va. He was of the Catholic Faith, and had been a resident of Brick Row, Keystone, W.Va. for 62 years before moving to the Sandlick area in 2002.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James D. Oliver Jr.; his grand-daughter, Jessica Church-Hale; his son-in-law, John "Buster" Church; his father- in-law, Jessie Garnie Miller; and his mother-in-law, Barbara Casey Miller.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 50 years, Vel Miller Oliver of the home; four sons, Jessie Garnie Miller and wife, Lisa of Bluefield, Va., James Mackie Oliver and Connie Oliver of Bluefield, W.Va., Kristopher Church of the home, Joseph Dean Miller and wife, Karen of Spencer Curve, Anawalt, W.Va.; two daughters, Katrina Church Spangler and husband, Larry of Princeton, W.Va., Sherry Kappa and husband, Jimmy of Hickory, N.C.; his sister, Anetia Oliver Pickett of Bluefield, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; also numerous special cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Northfork, W.Va. with the Reverend Olen Robertson officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, W.Va. Friends may call on Tuesday night at the Widener Funeral Home, Northfork, from 6 to 8:00 p.m.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Anthony Rasi, Jerry Rasi, David Ramella, Joe Parks, Tom Robinson, and Jeff Milam.
