LEXINGTON, Ky. —
Rose Kammer, 92, of 205 Continental Towers Nicholasville Road, Lexington, KY, formerly of Bluefield, WV passed away Monday, September 23, 2013 at Hartland Hills Independent Living Home, Lexington, KY.
Born August 12, 1921 in Williamson, WV she was the daughter of the late Harry and Helen Jo Stauffer Kammer. The family moved to Bluefield, WV in 1923. She graduated from Beaver High School in Bluefield in 1939. Rose attended Bluefield College and the University of North Carolina. She received a master's in social work from Boston University and Master's in speech therapy from the University of Kentucky. In addition to her storied career with the American Red Cross during World War II, Rose served for five years as the Dean of Women Students and Residents Director at the American International College in Springfield, Mass.
In 1966, Rose began her career as a social worker and speech therapist for United Cerebral Palsy of the Bluegrass thru its Child Development Center. In 1986, Rose began volunteering with the Markey Cancer Center (MCC). Rose was recognized at the AFP's 22nd Annual “National Philanthropy Day” Ceremony in 2008 for her outstanding and selfless work at MCC logging more than 25,000 volunteer hours.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister Isabelle and her brother Max.
Surviving Rose are her sister-in-law, Virginia Kammer of Bluefield, WV, a nephew Harry Kammer and his wife Terri of Bluefield, VA and their children Katherine Anne and Caroline Rose, a niece Alice Ann Sarver and her husband Steve of Bluefield, WV and their children Chad Kammer and Sarah Ann Kammer Brady.
The family received friends on Thursday, September 26, 2013 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, East Main Street, Lexington, KY. A Graveside service will be conducted Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery, Bluefield, WV with Rabbi Stanley Funston officiating.
