Forrest Monroe White

POCAHONTAS, Va. — POCAHONTAS, Va. —  Forrest "Duke" Monroe White, 71, of 137 East Railroad Avenue, Pocahontas, Va., died Monday, September 16, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  Born in Boissevain, Va. on August 19, 1942, he was the son of the late, Bob and Ethel White.  

Duke was a graduate of Pocahontas High School. He served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1970, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.  He was self employed and in 1981 founded Old Virginia Supply, Inc., and sold coal mining and machine replacement parts for 20 years. He was a founding member and mandolin player of bluegrass band, Bent Hickory. In 2008, he was honored at the Tazewell County Old Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers Convention, and presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Elaine Tabor White; brothers, Richard White, Pete White, and Floyd Dale.

Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Rebecca White of Pocahontas, Va. and Michele White Bradshaw of Raleigh, N.C.; son, Mark White of Pocahontas, Va.; grandson, William Bradshaw of Raleigh, N.C.; and sister, Margie Reeves and husband, Don of Abbs Valley.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va. at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Darrell Hunley and the Reverend Carlos Hess officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be conducted immediately following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va. Pallbearers will be Jerry Shinault, Tim Jarrett, TJ Jarrett, Larry Farthing, Jimmy Martin and Randy Boone. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Carter, Ronald Davis, and Danny Williams. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local animal shelter of your choice. The Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va. is serving the White family.
