Gracel Vivian Godfrey Alderson

BLUEFIELD — Gracel Vivian Godfrey Alderson, 97, of Bluefield passed away on Tuesday, the 11th., of March, 2014 the family historian of the Godfrey’s , Shrewsbury’s, Bailey’s & Morris families, left us to keep talking about what she loved to keep us updated on.

Born June 13, 1916, at Giatto, she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. Godfrey and Alice Shrewsbury Godfrey.

She was raised on a farm on Matoaka Mountain, attended Browning-Lambert school and was the last of the big Godfrey family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by eight brothers, one sister and also her first husband Archie N. Morris of Bland County, VA. They lived in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Roanoke, VA and finally Bluefield.

Archie and her mom passed away within a few months of each other.

After living and working in several states, Gracel moved to Roanoke, VA where she met and married her second husband, John Earl Alderson of Trinty in Botetourt County, VA.  Gracel was a member of the Trinty Church of the Brethern at Trinty-Daleville, VA.  She also sang in the choir.

They ran a farm that had six thousand chickens where they sold the eggs on the Roanoke City Market.  Earl’s health declined and was in Friendship Manor Nursing until his death.

Gracel then moved to Princeton and lived in Princeton Towers for a number of years.  She always liked to look nice in her clothes, her hair, her nails and her “pearls”.

If you didn’t visit her over the years, it was your loss.  She would give you a good meal, Reese cups, those little green cucumbers, a prayer or bible story.  To top it all off, a piece of cake or pie.

She is survived by Geraldine Bailey Clyburn Wilson of Rocky Mount, VA, Delma Bailey Belcher Swim of Boones Mill, VA, Sammie and Mildred Morris of Bluefield, WV and a host of nieces and nephews all over the United States.

Funeral Services were conducted on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Pastor Wayne Monroe officiated.  Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.

Online condolences may be shared with the family via www.memorialfd.com.

Everything comes gradually at its appointed hour. Aunt Gracel, if the heavens had no stars that is how much I will miss you.

Love, Geraldine.
