James William Jones, Jr.

TAZEWELL, Va. — TAZEWELL, Va. — J. W. Jones, Jr. of Tazewell, Va., died Tuesday, November 19, 2013. He was born June 2, 1921 at North Tazewell, Va. to Helen Wimmer Jones and James William Jones, Sr.

Billy, as he was known in his younger years, was a star football player at Tazewell High School. He earned the nickname “Wimpy” because he was known to eat dozens of hamburgers prior to football games. Bill graduated from Tazewell High School and entered the Navy where he saw action in the Aleutians before he was honorably discharged following a foot injury. He was always very proud of his service in the military and especially proud of meeting Mrs. Franklin D Roosevelt while he was at the Naval Hospital in Seattle, Wash. Following his military service, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Margaret “Maggie” Bailey Cecil. Bill then attended VPI on the GI Bill and graduated in 1949 with a degree in industrial engineering. He then went to work for Carbon Fuel Company in Dakota, W.Va. where he would stay in 1963. While in Dakota, Jim (as he was known by the miners) and Maggie had two children:daughter, Peg, born in 1949; and son, Bill, born in 1956.

Jim and Maggie moved back to Tazewell in 1963 where he worked for Kersey Manufacturing for a few years before he was hired by Consolidated Coal Company as the Division Training Coordinator/Engineer. While at Consol, Jim trained hundreds of miners from throughout the region as foreman as well as mine safety crews. He stayed with Consol until his retirement in 1984. Jim and Maggie then spent time bass fishing in Florida and traveled a little. They then spent most of their time feeding the many types of wildlife in and around their home up on Marion Avenue. Jim was very proud of the many “critters” that came into his yard. He loved to take pictures of the deer, the raccoon, the ground hogs, the squirrels, the wild turkeys and even the bear that would frequently visit his back yard. Jim was always carrying bundles of critter pictures in his pocket ready to share with anyone who expressed even the slightest interest in his passion for wildlife. Jim became a Free Mason in 1943 and transferred his membership to the Tazewell Lodge where he remained an active member until his death.

Jim's wife, Maggie, passed away in January 2002.

He is survived by his brother, Walter P. Jones of Norfolk, Va.; his son, James William “Bill” Jones, III and wife, Michelle Meister-Jones, DVM of Lebanon, Va.;  and  daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Jones Rucker, DVM  and husband, Bayard A. Rucker, DVM of Lebanon, Va.; two granddaughters, Katherine Jones and husband, Patrick Cronce of Tazewell, Va. and Elizabeth Peyton Jones Smith and husband, Derick Smith of Claypool Hill, Va.; two great-granddaughters, Peyton Avery Smith and Grace Carter Smith of Claypool Hill, Va.; and one step-grandson, Mark Joseph Weisbarth of Lebanon, Va..

A short celebration of Jim's life will be held at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. with Dr. Thomas A. Conley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In keeping with his wishes, his body will be cremated and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorial donations be made to Southwest Virginia Veterinary Service's Wildlife Fund, established for the treatment and rehabilitation of sick and injured wildlife.
