James W. “Jim” Thompson

PRINCETON —  James W. “Jim” Thompson, 85, of Burgess Street in Princeton, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Princeton Community Hospital with his four daughters by his side. He will truly be missed and remembered by all who knew and loved him. Born in Charmco, W.Va., he was the son of the late Wyatt and Viola Jones Thompson.

Jim was the retired President and C.E.O. of Mercer County Bank and One Valley Bank in Princeton. He was very instrumental in bringing professional baseball to Princeton. Those who knew Jim are aware of his long list of memberships and involvements in professional, civic and social organizations and of his countless contributions generously given to causes in Princeton and the surrounding area. These were gifts from his heart to his beloved community and by his request will not be listed. “May the Work I Have Done Speak for Me” is an excellent description of the life he lived and the legacy he leaves.

His devoted wife of 57 years and his one and only true love, Merle Jean Burks Thompson, preceded him in death in 2007. One sister, Hazel Lemasters and two brothers-in-law, Herman Henderson and Bill Shafer also preceded him in death.

Survivors include four loving daughters, Rita Kay Kirby of Princeton, Debra Helton of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Karen Cox and Terri Sheppard both of Princeton; five grandchildren, Lee Ann Binion and husband Carl, Ryan Justin Kitts, Jason Wyatt Cox, Austin Andrew Cox and Erica Jean Sheppard; four great-grandchildren, Lucas Binion, Logan Binion, Landon Binion and Kayli Kitts; three sisters, Clara Henderson of Hopewell, Va., Mina Shafer of Rupert, W.Va., and Betty Alderson and her husband John of Alderson, W.Va.; one brother, Rayburn “Bud” Thompson and his wife Wanda of Salem, Va.; one brother-in-law, Arthur Lemasters of Chesapeake, Va., and a close family friend, Bonnie Romano of Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Entombment will follow in Resthaven Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Princeton. Family will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Monday.
