Born October 31, 1924, on Atwell Mountain, Atwell, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence and Chloe Short Atwell.
He was a resident of McDowell County all of his life. He was a retired coal miner from Olga Coal Company and a member of U.M.W.A. Local 6026 of Coalwood. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Church of Christ on Atwell Mountain.
Preceded in death by in addition to his parents; stepmother, Tilda Short Atwell; three brothers, Hugh, Lafe and Jay Atwell; five sisters, Violet, Audrey, Irene, Ethel and Mickey; one great-grandson, Michael; one great-granddaughter, Gabrielle.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Esther Addair Atwell of Yukon; four sons, Larry Atwell and wife Jackie of Hendersonville, TN, Bill Atwell and wife Debbie of Vienna, WV, Danny Atwell and wife Bonnie of Bristol, VA, Brock Atwell and wife Dawn of Richlands, VA; two daughters, Darlene Jones and husband Mike of Anderson, IN, Rosetta Lawson of Yukon; two brothers, Henry Atwell, Ray Atwell; three sisters, Fannie Short, Anne Addair, Kay Sale; four grandsons, Michael, Jacob, Roman, Travis; seven granddaughters, Elizabeth, Amber, Jessica, Lisa, Lindsey, Kellyn, Mary Beth; five great grandsons, T.J., Cooper, Landry, Charlie, Sylas; three great-granddaughters, Sophie, Chloe and Laney.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 1 P.M. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in War, WV with Reverend Spencer Oxford, officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell, WV.
Friends may call Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the funeral home, from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Sumner Regional for Highpoint Hospice Volunteer Service Department, Box 1558, Gallatin, TN 37066.
