GARY, W.Va. — Leon “Babe” Allison age 93, of  P.O. Box 778 Gary, WV  24836 peacefully departed this life on Thursday, April 9, 2013 at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va. following a lingering illness.

He was born January 20, 1920 in Thomasville, N.C., and the son of the late John Allison and Hattie Mock Allison.  He was a 1938 graduate of Gary District High School and a Veteran of the US Army having served during WW II.  For many, many years he was employed at the US Steel Cleaning Plant in Gary and a member of the first aide team.   A long time ago, he gave his life to the Lord and joined the Welch Church of Christ where he served as treasurer.  He was a fire fighter for the City of Gary, treasurer of the Tug River Burial Fund and a member of F.&A.M. Euclid Lodge of Gary. In 2008, he was inducted into the “Black Hall of Fame” and an inductee of the McDowell County Sports’ Hall of Fame scheduled for May 5, 2013.  In earlier years he sang with a Quartet, was a musician and continued singing during his final day.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by “the love of his life,” his wife, Grace Thompson Allison; one son, Leon “Sonny buck” Allison Sr.; four siblings:  John, Maxine, Rosie and William “Shug,”; one grandson, Corey and a great-grandson, Savaught. Mr. Allison was the last surviving member of his original family.

He is survived by his devoted family; which includes his daughter, Betty Grace and her husband, James Maxwell Sr. of Terrell, Texas; his granddaughter, Tracy L. Allison and caregiver of the home; eleven additional grandchildren:  Apollos (LaCoya), Miriam (Kermit), Leon (Shemika) Jr., Nicole, Thomas (NaRhonda) Jr., Julian, Shawn, Nick, Carlos, Renee and Dina (Ellis Jr.); 27 great-grandchildren and a special great-grandson, Marlin Jr. of the home and a host of other relatives; his Church family and friends.

Home going service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Welch Church of Christ 750 Stewart Street Welch, W.Va. with Pastor J.P. Blankenship officiating, assisted by Pastor Bill Christian and the Reverend Larry Hairston.  Entombment will follow in Restlawn Mausoleum, on Rt. 20, Littlesburg Road, Bluewell, WV where military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1144.

Grandsons and granddaughters will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers and honorary pallbearers Tyrone Hairston and Robert Wade.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., until time of service on Saturday at the Church.
