Kirby Devon Walker

RIVERSIDE, Texas — Kirby Devon Walker's spirit left his earthly body on March 23, 2012. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer at his home in Riverside, Texas. His spirit won…for to die is gain.

Born July 3, 1943 in Matoaka, W.Va., to Woodrow and Margaret Walker. Kirby enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1960. He was a Sharp Shooter, Cross Country Skier, and Tank Driver in the U.S. Army 2nd AD “Hell on Wheels” 41st Infantry Regiment. He served in Kentucky, Colorado, Georgia, Alaska, California, Texas and Germany before being honorably discharged. After his military career, he went into retail business and retired from Stride Rite Corporation.

The greatest passion of his life was spreading the Gospel. He traveled extensively through about 40 states within the United States preaching in churches, auditoriums, conferences, prisons, tents, street corners, to anyone who would give an ear to the good news of Jesus Christ. Doors were open to him within the Churches of God, The Assembly of God, and The Church of God of Prophecy, Baptist Church, and many others. He had been an ordained minister for 37 years; at the time of his passing he was licensed with the Rose Assembly Church out of Snyder, Okla.

Most people who met him thought he was an odd fellow, with an unusual sense of humor, but filled with charm and sincerity. We like to think of Dad as unique, one of a kind, at the end of the day a heart as big as a West Virginia mountain. His smile could light up a room.

He is preceded in death by his son, Timothy Devon Walker; his spouse, Carolyn Faye Walker; his parents, Woodrow and Margaret Walker; and a brother, Curtis Walker.

Left behind to carry on his legacy are his oldest son, Kevin D. Walker, who took such good care of him until God called him home; and his “baby girl,” Valorie Neely and her husband, Jeremy; and grandson, Trayven, all of Princeton and Bluefield, W.Va.; mother of his children and lifelong friend, Yvette Myers of Princeton. Kirby also leaves behind two brothers, Lonnie Walker and wife, Maxine, Roger Walker and wife, Pat; and three sisters, Joyce Tedder and husband, John, Peggy Blackwell, and Corlas French from Princeton, W.Va., and Arizona; a host of nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

Kirby's network of friends spanned across the United States. We are grateful for each and everyone who called and kept in touch during his long illness.

Traditions Hospice held a memorial service in his honor on May 24th, 2012 at George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

His remains have been cremated and a small private memorial service will be held at a later date in West Virginia. His children will notify family and friends when that date nears.

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” John 11:25
