Born June 2, 1935 in Pocahontas, VA, he was the son of the late Ernest E. Poe, Sr. and Rhea Hartley. Mr. Poe was raised in Pageton, WV and was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He had worked at Coppinger Machinery for 25 years and later owned Ernie's Fix It Shop in Bluefield for many years. Mr. Poe had also been a longtime volunteer at the VA Hospital in Beckley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Jones and Barbara Poe.
Survivors include three daughters, Carla Handy and husband Michael of Mt. Sterling, KY, Karen Bailey and husband Donnie of Saltville, VA and Valerie Johnson of Morganton, NC; grandchildren, Brittany, Luke, Jessie, Emily and Hannah; and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday December 31, 2013 from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel at 7:00 PM with Pastors Terry Kornegay and Donnie Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour.
In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Poe will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that memorial contributions, if desired, be made to Springfield Center Activities Fund, Route 1, Box 101 A, Lindside, WV 34951.
