• Vivian Hensley, 79, of Tazewell, Va., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 in a Tazewell hospital. Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
• Ethel A. Mason, 68, of 121 Ben Bolt Ave., Tazewell, Va., died Dec. 19, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Rodriguez Funeral Home, Pocahontas, Va.

Vance Ross Cregger
TAZEWELL, Va. — Vance Ross Cregger, 72, of Tazewell, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006. Born Feb. 2, 1934 in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of the late Paul and Vicie Puckett Cregger. He was a faithful member of the Thompson Valley Church of God, which he joined in 1966. He loved the Lord and his church. Mr. Cregger worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 27 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nellie Asbury Cregger; one daughter, Lisa Marie Cregger Johnson of the home; one foster son, James Alert Asbury of Christiansburg, Va.; three granddaughters, Mae Ann Turner, Samantha Turner and Lisa Asbury all of Christiansburg; four sisters, Ruth Fields and husband, Dewey of Orange, Va., Mary Ann Peggy York of Tazewell, Erma Walthall and husband, Teddy of Maryland, and Mary Reimann of Seattle, Wash.; brothers, William (Bill) Cregger, Robert (Curley) Cregger, Glen (Lee) Cregger, Clarence (Joe) Cregger all of Tazewell, Sammy Cregger of Fairfax, Va. and R.C. Cregger of Midland, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with Brother W.T. Meredith and the Rev. Kelvin Seabolt officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Thompson Valley, Va. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006.

George “Butch” Denton Sr.
WELCH — George “Butch” Denton Sr., 57, of Edmore Village, Welch, formerly of Big Four, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 17, 2006 at his residence after a short illness.
Born Oct. 31, 1949 at Superior, he was the son of the late Homer Denton and Peggy Workman Denton. He was affiliated with the Pentecostal Holiness faith, was a disabled maintenance worker for Welch Gas Co-op, and Perry and Lee Plumbing. He was a resident of McDowell County most of his life and had resided in Welch for the past two months.
Left to cherish his memories: His wife of 33 years, Audrey Privett Denton of the home; one son, George Denton Jr. of the home; one daughter, Jennifer Beane and husband Jacob of Star, N.C.; one granddaughter, Kelsey Beane of Star; two brothers, John Denton and wife Betty of Martinsville, Va., David Denton and wife Brenda of Big Four; three sisters, Myrtle Denton of Welch, Susie Denton of Welch, Shirley Cochran and husband James of Martinsville; George Denton Jr.’s girlfriend, Meagan Reed of Iaeger.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 at noon at the Widener Funeral Home Chapel, Kimball with the Rev. Larry Buckland officiating. Burial will follow at the Elkhorn Church Cemetery on Belcher Mountain near Welch.
Friends called Tuesday from 6 to 9:00 p.m. at the Widener Funeral Home, Kimball.

Lessie M. Hart
MONTCALM — Lessie M. Hart, 95, of P.O. Box 41, Montcalm, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 at her residence, after a three-year illness.
Born on April 6, 1911 in North Wilkesboro, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Wilson and Dora Taylor Winebarger. She had been a resident of Montcalm most of her life and was retired from Griffin Pie Company in Bluefield. She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Montcalm.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on Sept. 24, 1982 by her husband, Robert William Hart, whom she married on Dec. 24, 1926. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert William Hart Jr. and Claude Ray Hart; four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include: One sister: Fannie (Winebarger) Stewart of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons: Carl Hart and wife Carol of Lake Placida, Fla., Jack Hart and wife Peggy of Elkhart, Ind., Gerald Hart and wife Dorothy of Elkhart; three daughters: Mary Nell White and husband Gene of Montcalm, Virginia Carlson and husband Norman of Elkhart, Shirley Summers and husband Thomas of Roanoke, Va.; 21 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren; many other extended family members.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Pastor Eddie Via and Minster Harold Goins officiating the service. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Mausoleum in Bluewell.

Ruth Adele McKinney Hooker
RICHLANDS, Va. — Ruth Adele McKinney Hooker, 75, passed away in her home surrounded by her daughters on the morning of Dec. 18, 2006. Born on May 11, 1931 in Whitewood, Va. to Beve and Hattie Horn McKinney, she was the wife of Ralph Hooker for 24 years and was a life long resident of Richlands, Va. She was a nurse for 23 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Beve McKinney; her mother, Hattie Horn McKinney; three sons, Aaron "Bo" Hooker, Kenneth Dale Hooker and Roy Wayne Hooker; one granddaughter, Jessie Adele Hooker. Also preceded in death by three sisters, Goldie Horn, Arlene Horn and Ramona Stacy, all of Staunton, Va.; and one brother, Curtis McKinney of Richlands.
She is survived by four daughters, Delaine Hooker Cole Gannon of Fishersville, Va., Rhonda Gail Hooker of the home, Linda Hooker Shelton of Pounding Mill, Va. and Mrs. Jerry Johnson (Debby Hooker) of Baptist Valley, Va. and one daughter of the heart, Linda Branham; her sisters, Margaret Cole of Jewell Ridge, Va., Carol Campbell of Swoope, Va., Yvonne Cole of Martinsville, Va., Maude St. Clair of New Castle, Va.; one brother, Beverly McKinney Jr. of Whitewood, Va.; and one sister of the heart, Naomi McKinney Horn. Also survived by nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.
Friends and family may attend a memorial service at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va. to be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 and conducted by Pastor Mark Hinson. Family will receive guests following the service until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and also at the home in Lake Park following the service.

Goldie Elizabeth Hungerford
BRAMWELL — Goldie Elizabeth Hungerford, 73, of P.O. Box 231, Bramwell, died on Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 in a Bluefield hospital.
Born on Aug. 24, 1933 in Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Nellie Estelle Dyson. She had been a resident of Bramwell for 13 years.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister.
Survivors include: Special sister: Patricia Dickerson and husband Jerry Sr. of Bramwell; two nieces and four nephews; three great nieces and one great nephew; two sisters and four brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with the Rev. Jimmie Jones officiating, with burial following.
Friends may call on Thursday, before services, from noon-1:00 p.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell.

Vivian E. “Pat” McCoy
BRADSHAW — Vivian E. "Pat" McCoy, 74, of Bradshaw, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at his residence following an accident.
Mr. McCoy was born June 17, 1932 at Iaeger, a son of the late Oscar and Elizabeth Muncy McCoy. He was a retired coal miner and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Oscar McCoy Jr. and Otis McCoy, and one grandson, Joseph McCoy preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Fannie Osborne McCoy of the home; one daughter, Mary Rowe of Bradshaw; one son, Darrell McCoy and wife Theodoshia also of Bradshaw; three grandchildren, Amie Shupe and husband Randy of Richlands, Va., Jessica Horn and husband Chris also of Richlands, and Jordan Justice and husband Brandon of Avondale; adopted granddaughter, Kelly Shrader McCoy; two great grandchildren, Brent and Gracie Shupe both of Richlands; four sisters, Lucille Coleman and Linda Auville both of Iaeger, Oreatha Shrader of Pageton, and Wanda Bangert of Statesville, N.C.; and three brothers, Frank, Carl, and Ronnie McCoy all of Iaeger; also, Cody Coleman of Athens who adopted "Pat" for his PawPaw.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Charles Rose, the Reverend John Wheeler, and the Reverend Granville
Mullins officiating at the Family Worship Center at Jolo. Burial will follow in McCoy Cemetery on Coon Branch Mountain near Iaeger where military graveside services will be conducted by Sandy River American Legion Post No. 175 and VFW Post No. 1144.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Randy Shupe, Chris Horn, Brandon Justice, Michael Blankenship, Malcolm McCoy, and David Hopkins.

Jahue T. Meador Jr.
PIPESTEM — Jahue T. Meador Jr., 84, of Pipestem, died at 8:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 28, 1922 at Lick Creek, he was the son of the late Jahue Tolliver Meador Sr. and Luzzannie Bell Blair Meador. Mr. Meador was a retired jeweler, a trade he practiced for the past 60 years and was a past member of the Speedway Gospel Tabernacle.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Calvin Meador in 1994 and several brothers and sisters.
Survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn L. Meador; two daughters: Drema Ritchey and husband Doug of Bluefield and Sharon Irene McBride and husband Richard of Pipestem; four grandchildren: Calvin Meador Jr., Michelle Meador Browne, Wesley E.T. McBride and Cary G. Hubbard; four great grandchildren: Matthew and Josh Hubbard, Megan Brown and Jacob Blankenship; and one sister: Rhoda Irene McNiel of Daniels.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton with the Rev. Roy Dale Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday (today).

Mr. William Alexander Nogosky Sr.
FORT MILL, S.C. — Mr. William Alexander Nogosky Sr., 73, of 935 Dericks Crossing, Fort Mill, S.C., died Dec. 18, 2006 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, N.C.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at the Clover First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Walker and the Rev. Irvin Plowden officiating.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.
Mr. Nogosky was born on Nov. 5, 1933, in Filbert to the late Alex and Mary Stefanski Nogosky. He was a graduate of Concord College and was retired from USX Corporation.
Mr. Nogosky was the most caring, giving and loving person we as a family had ever known. Totally selfless and full of love for his family and for life.
Survivors are his wife, Jean Dinkins Nogosky of the home; daughter, Lisa K. Demnard of Morgantown; son, William A. Nogosky Jr. of Clover, S.C.; three sisters, Frances McCray of High Point, N.C., Mary Ann Raines of Huntington, and Polly Widener of Beckley; two grandchildren, Julia Demnard and Laura Demnard both of Morgantown.

Claudia Virgie “Tie” Rainey
TAZEWELL, Va. — Claudia Virgie “Tie” Rainey, daughter of the late Elders George Miles Dickerson and Mary Dickerson Thompson was born Sept. 12, 1929 at Tazewell, Va.
She became a member of Midway Church of Christ (D.O.C.) at an early age. She was better known by her nickname “Tie”. She married Johnny Edward Rainey. Claudia was sick most of her life. She was a domestic worker in younger years. She loved football, good singing, and her “family”. She was an excellent cook.
She departed this life Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at age 77. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; one sister; two brothers; one daughter in law.
She leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters, Hilah Merea Rainey, Edna Helena Hendricks and husband, Howard all of Tazewell, Claudia Ann Brown and husband, John of Bluefield, Delphyne Lynn Rainey, and Jeanette Wilson and husband, William all of North Tazewell, Va.; two sons, John Alexander Rainey and wife, Olympia of Virginia Beach, Va. and Steve Murray Rainey of Tazewell; one sister, Edna Dickerson Moore of Tazewell; three brothers, Roscoe Alexander Dickerson and Charles Reed Dickerson both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Thaddeus Eugene Dickerson of Aberdeen, Md.; two sisters in law, Gladys Dickerson of Tazewell and Clara Dickerson of Cleveland, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; special friend, Mrs. Virginia Clements; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at Midway Church of Christ in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning officiating and Bishop R.W. Dickerson presenting the eulogy. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell. Grandsons serving as pallbearers are Steven Rainey, Greg Carter, Twyman Rainey, William Wilson Jr. Brian Rainey, and Marcus Carter. Charles Lindberg Robinson
VALLSCREEK — Charles Lindberg Robinson, 79, of Vallscreek, went to be with his Lord in a Beckley hospital Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006.
Born in 1927 at Clinchport, Va., he was the son of the late William P. and Zella “Granny” McMillan Robinson.
Mr. Robinson had made his home in the Vallscreek area for most of his life. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and was a self employed blacksmith. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Barns-Beavers VFW Post No. 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean conflict and was a member of the Hartwell Church of God.
He was the last surviving member of the immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Lillian Johnson and Eva Crouse, brothers, Frank and Paul Robinson.
Survivors include: His wife of 56 years, Arizona Patterson Robinson; daughter, Drema Pettigrew and husband Eric of Louisville, Ky.; sons, Dennis Robinson and wife Kim of Tazewell, Va., and Robbie Robinson and wife Connie of Richlands, Va.; two step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; special friend, Lee Roy Bandy.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Hartwell Church of God, Hartwell with Pastor George Mandakunis and Pastor Avery Lynch officiating. Interment will follow at Hartwell Cemetery, Hartwell. Members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell will conduct military graveside rites. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Lenora “Ann” Reed Sandridge
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Lenora "Ann" Reed Sandridge, 63, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Richlands, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, in Harrisburg, Pa., surrounded by her family.
She was born Oct. 17, 1943 in Richlands, Va., and was the daughter of the late Gillis and Flora Belle Cole Reed.
She graduated from Richlands High School Class of 1960. She retired in May of 2005 after more than 20 years at Connor-Rich Associates of Camp Hill. She was a member of the Carlisle Church of Christ in Carlisle, Pa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Arvin Reed.
Ann is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Clayton Sandridge of Mechanicsburg; her two sons, Ryan Edward Sandridge of Arlington, Va. and Jason Reed Sandridge of Washington, D.C.; her brother, James Reed of Belton, Texas; her sisters, Betty Foy and Sue Huels both of Blacksburg, Va.; her sister, Patty Gentry of Kingsport, Tenn.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006 at the Myers Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg with Kevin Key of the Carlisle Church of Christ officiating.

Joseph Scammell Jr.
GRUNDY, Va. — Joseph Scammell Jr., 80, of the Poplar Creek area of Route No. 2, Grundy, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Joseph Scammell Sr. and Ellen Guess Scammell. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a member of Poplar Creek Church of Christ. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and a member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Corp. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7025. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Scammell was preceded in death by his wife: Joan Juanita Stiltner Scammell on May 30, 1996; one son: Larry Scammell; two brothers: Frank and James Scammell.
He is survived by: Sons: Donald Ray and wife: Kathy Scammell of Maxie, Va., Danny Gene and wife: Rosa Scammell of Maxie. Also, survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Joseph Scammell Jr. will be conducted Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Raffael Farrow and Evg. Mike Rife officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

PEARISBURG, Va. — Peggy J. Shaver Stowers, 75, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg.
Born Oct. 16, 1931 at Ballard, she was the daughter of the late Samuel P. Shaver Sr. and Lacy Wilkerson Shaver. She was a homemaker and a former employee at Oxford Industries.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Burns and Beulah Shaver, and one brother, Donald Shaver.
She is survived by two daughters: Sandi Kastle of Charles Town, and Vicky Hazelwood and husband Richard of Narrows, Va.; two brothers: Clarence Basil Shaver of Garden Grove, Calif., and Charles Shaver of Shelby, Ohio; two sisters: Alta Christian and husband Hobert of Dublin, Va., and Muriel Miller and husband Wade of Lindside; a special niece, Carol Wolf and husband Larry of Dublin, Va.; four grandchildren: Lynne Hazelwood, Shana Midkiff, Jim Hazelwood, and Jennifer Kastle; four great-grandchildren: Jolan, Jocelyn, Jillian, and Nicholas; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rita Frances Sykes
RICHLANDS, Va. — Mrs. Rita Frances Sykes, 67, of Richlands, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2006 in a Lebanon, Va. hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Baptist Valley, Va. and was the daughter of the late Robert Sam and Hester Allen Asbury, both Tazewell County, Va. natives.
She had made her home in Tazewell County all of her life and was a former LPN for Obstetrics at the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital. She was a graduate of Tazewell High School and attended Radford University.
Survivors are: Her husband: Jack B. Sykes; one son: Paul Robert “Flipper” Sykes of Richlands; one sister: Mildred Harman of Tazewell, Va.; one brother: George O. Asbury of Dixon, Mo.
