Victor C. “Pepaw” Argabright
PRINCETON — Victor C. ”PePaw” Argabright, 81, of North Wickham Avenue, Princeton, went to be with Jesus in the early hours on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Heartland Nursing Home in Beckley.
Born on April 16, 1926 in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Edgar Lee and Essie Mae Cromer Argabright. Pepaw loved to walk prior to developing diabetes. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Japan during World War II. He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John, Joe, Eddie and Manuel Argabright and sisters, Vivian Mullens, Margaret Neel and Lorraine Pruett.
Survivors include: Christine Argabright of Princeton; sons, Victor Argabright of Eastpoint, Mich., Chris Thomas and wife Debbie of Princeton, Charles “Mickey” Thomas and wife Martha of Bluefield, Va.; daughters, Sandra Hylton and Wayne of Princeton, Ruth Sneed and husband John also of Princeton; brother, Paul Argabright of Parkview, Md.; His Best Pal, Alex Sneed; seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.
On Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m., we will celebrate the life of Victor Argabright from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, with the Pastor Eddie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military graveside rites will be conducted by the West Virginia Honor Guard. Charles Richard Briley
BLUEFIELD — Charles Richard Briley, age 62, of 549 Union Street, Bluefield, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at his residence.
Born November 27, 1944 in Bramwell, he was the son of the late Carl and Ellen G. Briley Harrison. He had been a lifelong resident of Mercer County. Over the years he had made many friends through his employment as a Bramwell police officer, coal miner and security officer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard and served his country for 12 years.
Survivors include: Wife: Angela Briley of the home; son: Christopher Briley and wife Tammy of Bluefield, Va.; three daughters: Tina Hitt, Judy Murray and husband Mike of Ocala, Fla., Rebecca Copley and husband Patrick of Bluefield; seven grandchildren: Brandon Jones, Brittany Hitt, Cody and Kristin Nicky and Devon Briley, Christina Bircham, and Dakota Murray.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with the Rev. Robin Buchannon officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with Christopher Briley, Pat Copley, Brandon Jones, Cody Copley, Michael Whitacre, Kevin Byler, Aaron Whittaker, Richard Kinzer, and Greg Kinzer will serve as pallbearers. DJ Dunbar will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Nicky and Devon Briley will serve as junior pallbearers. The WV Honor Guard will conduct military graveside services.

William Townsend Brooks
GREENSBORO, N.C. — William Townsend Brooks, age 62, of Greensboro, passed away on October 27, 2007 at Wesley Long Community Hospital.
A celebration of his life and accomplishments was held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31st at the Brooks family residence at 5416 Eastern Shores Drive.
Born February 6th, 1945 in Woodbury, N.J., he was the son of the late Angela Marie Taylor and the late Clifford William Brooks.
While at Woodbury High School, Bill represented his hometown as the boy governor of New Jersey.
Bill graduated from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania in 1967. At Gettysburg, he was an All-Conference and All-East football player and class president. He also graduated in the top 10% of his class. He continued his education at Syracuse University where he earned his master's degree. He was later commissioned as an Army officer serving 23 months of overseas duty in Okinawa during the Vietnam conflict. During his service, he was nominated for the Soldier's Medal for saving lives under hostile conditions. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant.
Bill spent time at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. There he served as a university professor, a college dean and a highly successful college football coach. While serving as the country's youngest head football coach on the college level, he amassed a 65% win record.
Bill was the founder and CEO of The Brooks Group, a highly successful sales consulting firm based in Greensboro. Using Bill's ideas, The Brooks Group has trained more than one million salespeople all over the world.
Bill was the author of 19 books including 3 best sellers. The former CEO of a national firm with 3500 employees, Bill was a member of the Professional Speaking Hall of Fame. He was also the only person in the world to concurrently hold the Certified Speaking Professional, the Council of Peers Award for Excellence and the Certified Management Consultant designations.
Perhaps Bill's greatest accomplishment, however, is the family he leaves behind. His wife, Nancy Greever, is an accomplished glass artist. His older son, Will, is married to Andrea Notaro and serves as the Director of Sales at The Brooks Group. His younger son, Jeb, is currently enrolled at Elon Law School. Bill's older brother Adrian Brooks and his wife Claire spend time in New Jersey and Florida.
Bill focused his life on helping as many people as he possibly could. He exercised this drive by building winning football teams, a successful business, and countless friendships.
Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Central Church Cemetery in Burkes Garden, Va. with the Rev. Ed Schaack officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Josephine Augusta Brown
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Mrs. Josephine Augusta Brown, 101 years old, was born to the late Albert and Cara Lee Owens in Bluefield, Va., on September 6, 1906. She departed this life and entered into eternal rest on October 30, 2007.
She was married to the late John E. Brown, and to that union 11 children were born. She showered her tender loving care and devotion, not only for her children, but also helped to rear three grandchildren; Joequilla Turk, Frank Brown, and Sophia Dardy. She loved to cook and was known for her delicious rolls. She confessed Christ as her personal Saviour at an early age. She was an active member of Jones Street Christian Church in Bluefield.
She loved music and was the pianist for Jones Street and several other churches. In 2002 she moved to Knoxville, Tenn. and became an active member of Bentley Street Christian Church, where she was know to all as "Mom" Brown, until her illness. She was also an Honorary Deaconess.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Cara Lee Owens; sister, Uzitha Trigg; husband, John E. Brown; sons, John Robert and Lowell E. Brown, and grandson, Lowell "Peede" S. Brown.
She is survived by daughters: Drexel Thomas and Deborah Martin, Columbus, Ohio, Azell Grittens, Rancho, Cardova, Calif., Nannie Rose Washington, Jericho, N.Y., Rev. Azolla (Ernest) Phillips, LaFreda Lowery, Decloris Geter, and Audrey Brown, Knoxville, Tenn.; son, Raymond Brown, San Diego, Calif.; 22 grandchildren, to include the special devotion of Josephine Brown and Sophia Dardy; 43 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; nephew, Allen (Margie) Kincaid, and a host of nieces, cousins, and many dear friends to include, Ella Williams, Knoxville, Tenn.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2007, 12:00 noon at Greater Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church, 104 Park Street, Bluefield, with the Rev. Lilly Williams, officiating. The family will receive friends today at Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Route 20, Bluewell.

Armon Carmon
PRINCETON — Armon Carmon, 88, passed from this life Thursday, November 01, 2007, at the Princeton Health Care Center. He previously had resided with his daughter, Deborah Six, at her residence at 108 Glendale Avenue, Princeton.
Born September 26, 1919, in Gary, he was the son of the late Victoria and Walter Carmon. He retired in 1974 from Semet Solvay Coal where he served as electrician and mechanic for the Amigo Mines. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a recipient of the French Liberation Award.
Armon was an avid bowler for 60 years, loved golfing, fishing and shooting pool with his family. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a member of Princeton Elks Lodge No. 1459 and the United Mine Workers of America. He was of the Catholic faith.
Armon had been a resident of Princeton since 1950 moving here from Davy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Carmon; brothers, David Carmon, Rudy Carmon, August Carmon, and John Carmon; sisters, Sophie Grygiel and Kitty Grygiel; and son-in-law, Frank Grygiel. Survivors include son, David Armon Carmon and his wife Dottie of Glen Allen, Va.; daughters, Deborah Six of Princeton, Rebecca Carmon and friend Gail Bowling of Advance, N.C., and Cathy Underwood and husband Scott of Bradley; grandchildren, Michael Carmon and wife Rosalind of Williamsburg, Va., Adam Carmon and wife Hope of Glen Allen, Va., Tina Six and friend Tammy Lambert, Suzanne Thompson and husband Will, all of Princeton, Kevin Six of Randleman, N.C., and Brandi and Shannon Underwood of Bradley; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Carmon, and Ethan and Ava Thompson; sisters, Vera (Penny) Stafford of Charleston, and Betty Cota of Raleigh, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Jack and Bill Lewis; and sister-in-law, Joan Wiley. Also surviving are special caregiver, Janice Lambert, several nieces and nephews, and special friends, nurses, and caregivers at Princeton Health Care.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Fr. William K. Matheny, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Mercer County Veterans Council and WV National Guard will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael Carmon, Adam Carmon, and Kevin Six, great-grandson, Zachary Carmon, Scott Underwood, and Will Thompson.

Dallas Mitchell Dillon
PETERSTOWN — Dallas Mitchell Dillon, 69, of Peterstown, departed this life Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton.
Born in Monroe County on May 13, 1938, he was a son of the late Mark Matthew and Lora Blanche Sarver Dillon. Dallas was a retired boiler operator with over 40 years service at Celanese Celco Plant at Narrows, Va., was a member of The Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ellen D. Pack.
He leaves to cherish his memory his companion and mother of his children, Louise Radford Dillon; a son, Mark Matthew Dillon of Boones Mill, Va.; two daughters, Debbie D. and Gregory Taufer of Peterstown and Tina and Chuck Lester of Ballard; a brother, Markie Dillon of Peterstown; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Bethel Chapel Church in the Clendennin Community at Narrows, Va. Burial will follow in Peterstown Cemetery with military rites by the VFW and American Legion Posts of Giles County. The family will receive friends at Bethel Chapel Church Friday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sergeant David (Bo) Eugene Lambert
MAVISDALE, Va. — Sergeant David (Bo) Eugene Lambert, age 39, of Mavisdale, Va., formerly of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Thursday, October 25, 2007 in Iraq.
Born November 9, 1967 in Richlands, Va., he was the son of Howard and Mary Sue Short Lambert of Cedar Bluff, Va. He was a Richlands High School graduate of the Class of 1987. David was a corrections officer for 11 years at Keen Mountain Correctional Center where he was a member of the Strike Force and Color Guard. He was a member of the American Legion. He served 15 years in the Army and National Guard where he was awarded the rank of Sergeant. He was serving with the 1033rd Engineer Support Company assigned to the 237th Engineer Company in Iraq.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Melvin Leonard and Cassie Opal Jenkins Lambert; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Lucille Cruey.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancée, Heather Spencer of Mavisdale; one sister, Michelle Wheeler and husband Brandon of Honaker; one nephew, Aiden Wheeler; one niece, Brittany Lambert; and his paternal grandfather, Clarence Short of Baltimore, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2007 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va. with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Keen Mountain Correctional Officers and National Guard Members.

James Wilson “Jim” Laws
BLUEFIELD — James Wilson “Jim” Laws, 83, of Bluefield, West Virginia, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Durham, North Carolina, on November 5, 1923, and was the son of Floyd M. and Emma Miller Laws. Jim was a graduate of Durham High School and attended North Carolina State University.
Jim served in the United States Air Force as an engineer/gunner on a B-24 bomber in the 8th Air Force from 1942-1945. He was shot down on his 18th mission and spent three months in the Belgium Underground.
He retired from Bailey Lumber Company as President in 1989 following 34 years of service to the company. He was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed the endearing friendships created during his many years of playing.
Jim was a member of Bland Street United Methodist Church (where he served over the years on numerous committees), the Bluefield Rotary Club (which named him a Paul Harris Fellow), Fincastle Country Club, the former Bluefield Country Club (which he served as President), and the Bluefield Elks Lodge. In addition, he served for 18 years on the Board of Directors of the Bluefield Housing Authority.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy L. Sargent, and a brother, Donald Laws.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris Mustard Laws; his daughter, Carolyn L. Morhous and her husband Larry, of Bluefield; grandson, Hunter Morhous of Arlington, VA; granddaughter, Peyton Morhous of Morgantown, WV; sister, Doris W. Carpenter, and her husband, Jack, of Galax, VA; brother, Jerry H. Laws, and his wife, Shirley of Sparta, NC; sister-in-law Marilyn M. Tinder of Bluefield, WV; brother-in-law Daniel P. MacMillan of Fayetteville, NC; as well as four nieces, two nephews, five great nieces and four great nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Mercer Funeral Home beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2007 with Dr. Allen A. Hammond officiating.

Emory Sidney Merrix
PRINCETON — Emory Sidney Merrix, age 82, of 124 Twin Pine Lane, Princeton, died on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in a Princeton hospital.
Born on January 16, 1925 in Stoney Creek, Va., he was a son of the late John Henry and Ollie Belle Jones Merrix. He had been a resident of Mercer County for 37 years and was a member of the Church of God. He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Marines 6th Division at Melanesia and Micronesia during the Tsing Tao China Surrender.
He was the last surviving member of his family of 16 children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Almeda Neal Merrix.
Survivors include: Daughters: Carol Allen and husband Richard of Princeton, Mary Colley and husband Jim of Lancaster, S.C., Sandi Merrix of Radford, Va.; son: Mike Merrix of Lancaster, S.C.; grandchildren: Mark Neel, Terri Marrazi, Lori Pringle, Dawn Jarrell; great-grandchildren: Justin Neal, Mikayla Jarrell, Cassadye Mann, James Pringle, James Small, Shawn Merritt; special friend: Joyce Hill of Princeton.

Nancy Josephine Nuckolls
BLUEFIELD, Va. — Nancy Josephine Nuckolls, 79, 306 Fincastle Lane, Bluefield, Va., died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Westwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bluefield, Va. Born September 21, 1928, in Toler, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Aubrey L. Nuckolls and Elsie Richardson Nuckolls.
Nancy was raised in Matewan, Mingo Co. and was a graduate of McLain's Business College, Bluefield. She was retired from CitiGroup (formerly Commerical Credit Corp.) and was a charter member of Fincastle Presbyterian Church.
Nancy was preceded in death by the following siblings: George Richardson Nuckolls, Madge N. Hilton, Jack Pettrey Nuckolls, Aubrey L. Nuckolls, Jr. and is survived by one sister, Ann Elizabeth Nuckolls, Bluefield, Va.
Graveside rites will be held at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield Tazewell Road on Friday (today), November 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Dr. Allen A. Hammond.

Miriam Geraldine Ramsey
SPANISHBURG — Miriam Geraldine Ramsey, 83, of 616 Wolf Creek Road, Spanishburg, died Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the home of her daughter. Born December 8, 1923 at Spanishburg, she was the daughter of the late Oswald Karnes and Claudie Holston Karnes.
Mrs. Ramsey was a homemaker and was member of the Basin Freewill Baptist Church. She also attended the Rich Creek Baptist Church at Spanishburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buster Ramsey in 1997; two daughters, Joyce Corkell and Betty Reed; and two brothers, Reginald Karnes and Harold Karnes.
Survivors include seven daughters, Norma Reed of Herndon, Patricia Gale Reed of Matoaka, Elsie May Sawarese and her husband Barry of Walterboro, S.C., Phyllis Geraldine Watts and her husband Jerry of Lewis, Del., Shirley Beatrice Burton of Deltona, Fla. and Rebecca Lynn Collins and her husband David and Angela Kathy Thomas and her husband Tony all of Spanishburg; three sons, Bobby Dale Ramsey and his wife Carol of Spanishburg, Stephen Ramsey and his wife Tomoko of Marydel, Md. and David Edward of Dover, Del.; one brother, Matthew Karnes of Upper Marlboro, Md.; three sisters, Leone Goins of Bristol, Va., Velma Ramsey of Wichita, Kan. and Kathleen Borders of Florida; 38 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Thomas A. Ratcliffe
BLUEFIELD, Va. — Thomas A. Ratcliffe, 87, of Princeton Health Care Center and formerly of Bluefield, Va., went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007.
He was born in Haysi, Va. on June 22, 1920, and was a son of the late John A. and Lillian L. Hopkins Ratcliffe.
He had served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp. as a Heavy Bomber mechanic. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church for many years and was currently a member of Mt. Jackson Baptist Church in Athens. He had spent most of his life as a carpenter and had worked for Bailey Lumber Company, and retired from Ossit Church Furniture Company. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, was a member of the American Legion in Bluefield, Va., the N.R.A., and life member of the Triangle Sportsman’s Club also in Bluefield, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ila Jean Scott Ratcliffe; a brother, Ward Ratcliffe; and a sister, Etta Mae Tabor.
Survivors include: Son, John R. Ratcliffe, Sr. and wife Rebecca of Bluefield; daughter, Donna Jean Coleman and husband Greg of Athens; grandchildren, John R. Ratcliffe, Jr. and wife Traci of Lashmeet, Robyn S. Nelsen and husband Steve of Houston, Texas, Kattie Walter of Pittsburgh, Pa.; great grandson, Cole Walters; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. with Pastor Eugene Harmon, Pastor Charley Rice, and Evangelist Dale Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Eddie Windle, John Ratcliffe, Jr., Sam Workman, Joey Windle, Randy Yost, John Murray and Tommy Tabor. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Bluefield, Va. VFW Memorial Post 9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion Post 14.
Donations may be made to the Princeton Health Care Center, 3115 Courthouse Rd., Princeton.

Margaret Louise Sayers
VILANO BEACH, Fla. — Margaret Louise Sayers, age 91, of Vilano Beach, Fla., formerly of Bluefield, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at San Marcos Nursing Home in St. Augustine, Fla. following a brief illness.
Born June 26, 1916 in Bluefield, Va., she was a daughter of the late David Robert Sayers and Vada Peery Sayers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Breed and Nancy Workman.
She is survived by two sisters, Barbara Cook and husband, Roy of Keller, Texas and Harriet Beavers and husband, Bernard of Tazewell, Va.; one brother, Robert Sayers of Erlanger, Ky. She is also survived by five nieces and four nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Bluefield with the Rev. Eddie Nash officiating.

Birdie Alice Sweeney
NORTHFORK — Birdie Alice Sweeney, age 70, of Northfork, formerly of Welch, went to be with the Lord Wednesday night, October 31, 2007, at Welch Community Hospital after a long illness.
Born March 13, 1937 in Wilcoe, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Jones and Bertha Rose Jones. She was affiliated with the Protestant faith, was a homemaker, and was a resident of Welch most of her life.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Allen Jones, Jesse Jones and Carl Jones.
She is survived by one daughter, Bertha Sue Hicks, address unknown; a special stepson, Sammy Frost of Hemphill; one sister, Laura Roberts of Iaeger; a niece, Wanda Morgan of Iaeger; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of the deceased, the body will be cremated. There will be no visitation or funeral at the funeral home.

Dean Whited
CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — Dean Whited, age 54, of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2007 in a Richlands, Va. hospital. Born September 5, 1953 in Richlands, Va., he was the son of Blanche Robinson Wade of Cedar Bluff, Va. and the late Dalley Wade.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his biological father, Damon Whited.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his biological mother, Geraldine Kolodciej; two brothers, Wayne Whited and his wife Nellie of Chicago, Ill. and Keith Whited and his wife Rhonda of Richlands; one sister, Tamara J. Plaster and her husband Larry of Rosedale; special nieces and nephews, Braydon Shaye Plaster, Alex Bowman and Lara Danielle Bowman and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va. with Brother Monroe Greeley officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Johnny Hylton, Jimmy Grizzle, Scott Bowman, Mervin Short, Buzzie Bohon and Keith Baldwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Walt Short, Larry Short, Roger Rife, Sam Barnette, Mike Fletcher, Jo Jo Hylton, Jeff Hylton, Adam Wade, Donnie Wade, Justin Wade, Chad Wade and other cousins.
