• Cherie Atwell, 42, of Princeton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Rodriguez-Pocahontas Funeral Home of Pocahontas, Va.
• Opal Cornwell, 70, of the Baptist Valley community of North Tazewell, Va., died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell, Va.
• Verena Lou Blankenship Vaughn, 91, of Narrows, Va., died Saturday, March 29, 2008 from Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, Va. Riffe’s Funeral Service of Narrows is in charge of arrangements.
• Tommy Lee Williamson, 74, of Adria section of North Tazewell, Va., died March 29, 2008 in a Bristol, Tenn. hospital following a brief illness. Arrangements are incomplete at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell, Va.

Jessie Comer, Jr.
PRINCETON — Jessie Comer, Jr., 82, of 901 Stafford Drive, Apt. 616 (Princeton Towers), Princeton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born December 18, 1925 at Lurich, Va., he was the son of the late Jessie Comer, Sr. and Cora Tanner Comer.
Mr. Comer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II in the Sea Bees. He retired from Sterling Grocery Co. in Princeton after 22 years and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Simpkins Comer; three sons, Jessie Lee Comer, Raymond Comer and Stanley Ray Comer; three brothers, Henry Comer, John Comer and an infant brother, James Comer; and two sisters, Pauley Dent and Virginia Helmondollar.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Daisy Kirby Comer of the home; one daughter, Brenda Burton and her husband Robert of Glenwood; two sisters, Mary Ratcliffe and her husband Odell of Pearisburg, Va. and Betty Richards of Princeton; two brothers, Robert Comer and his wife Alma of Oakvale and Roger Comer and his wife Pauline of Cheesy Creek; five grandchildren, Tina Burton and Jessica Burton both of Glenwood and Ray Comer, Edward Comer, Kevin Comer all of Dublin, Va.; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastors Eugene Hazelwood and Roger Hatfield officiating. Interment will follow at the New Zion Cemetery, Route 3, Princeton, where military honors will be conducted by the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Harold (Poppy) Goodman
POUNDING MILL, Va. — Mr. Harold (Poppy) Goodman, age 73, of Pounding Mill, Va., passed away Friday, March 28, 2008 at Oak Island, N.C.
Born at Jolo, W.Va. on December 24, 1934, he was the son of the late George Nathan and Lilly Belle Goodman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Alan Goodman; three brothers, Peerless Goodman, George Goodman, Jr., and James Goodman; four sisters, Pearlie Sutherland, Corby Wimmer, Marylou Wimmer and Pinkie White.
Harold served in the Army in occupied Germany from 1952-1960. He was a member of the Barnes-Beavers V.F.W. and a member of the American Legion at Grundy, Va. He was retired from Jewell Smokeless Coal Company and for the past 7 years, was employed by the Atlantic Group as a Nuclear Coatings Technician. Harold was a man of faith and a member of the Ivy Springs Baptist Church. He placed his Lord and Savior, family and friends first in his life. Harold enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, music and was a band member of the groups Kings Harbor Band, the Poor Valley Drifters and Caiged Angel. He had a multitude of friends and loved each and everyone and always welcomed them with a loving smile and a warm heartfelt hug.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Geneva Miller Goodman; four sons: Harold Layne Goodman and wife Melody of Meadowview, Va., Timothy Nathan Goodman and wife Cindy of Abingdon, Va., Samuel I. Goodman and wife Ruth of Richlands, Va. and Samuel Uriah Goodman of the home; two daughters: Angela Goodman Fuller and husband Steve of Cedar Bluff, Va. and Gina Goodman Davis and husband Johnny of Richlands, Va.; one brother, Roland K. Goodman and wife June of Abingdon, Va. and one sister, Thelma Goodman Vance and husband Burb of Swords Creek, Va.; 15 grandchildren: Anna, Josh, Shelley, Ben, Jeremiah, Michael, Stephanie, Luke, Jonathan, Misty, Jacob, Chyanne, Kayla, Garland and Evangeline; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces and many friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Harold (Poppy) Goodman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va. with the Rev. Phillip Cook and the Rev. Judy McKnight officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Samuel U. Goodman, Benjamin A. Rife, Jacob L. Rife, Adam H. Whited, Dove Christian, Cody Vandyke, Jonathan Goodman, Jeremiah H. Goodman and Luke R. Goodman. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Casey-Short V.F.W. Post 9640.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va. from 6-9 p.m. Monday (today).

Jacob E. King, Sr.
BLUEFIELD —Jacob E. King, Sr., 92, of Bluefield, W.Va., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 28, 2008.
Jacob was born September 23, 1915 to the late James Younger King and Minnie Dickerson King. He retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad in 1980 after 34 years of service. Jacob loved the Lord and his church Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bluefield, Va. He loved singing anywhere to lift up God including his church, the community choir and formerly at W.H.I.S. Radio Station. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, one daughter, Yvette Denise King and five brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Gervaise C. King of Bluefield; one daughter, Nicolette B. Brown and her husband Raymond of Midwest City, Okla.; two sons, Jacob E. King, Jr. and his wife Lillie of Columbus, Ohio and Dwight S. King of Bluefield; his beloved grandchildren, Damian Williams, Jacob King III, Raymona Wilborne and her husband Will, Kimberly Brown and Raymond Brown, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Effie Mae Holley of Detroit, Mich.; many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bluefield, Va. with the Rev. James Palmer officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may call at the church from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Tuesday.

Russell Max Pennington
BASTIAN, Va. — Russell Max Pennington, 68, of Bastian, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. A lifetime resident of Bastian, he was born on May 15, 1939, the son of Fred Pennington and the late Nannie Rose Harmon Pennington.
He was a retired diesel mechanic and 30-plus year member of the United Mine Workers of America. As a youth, he was an All-State high school baseball player and a nationally recognized member of the Future Farmers of America. He also volunteered and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps. He spent his retired years working his sawmill with his father, doing carpentry work with his wife, and restoring antique automobiles with his sons. He loved to see new places and went on several trips with his daughter across the country. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the community he loved.
Survivors include: His wife, Nancy McFadden Pennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell Jr. and Janet Kinser Pennington of Greensboro, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Regina Hall Pennington of Bastian, and daughter, Mary Beth Pennington, of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren: Brett Pennington, Julia Pennington, Tyler Pennington and Josh Pennington; his father, Fred Pennington of Bastian, and two siblings: a sister, Geraldine Peery, and a brother, John Pennington, both of Bastian, as well as a niece, Melanie Peery.

Denver Stacy, Sr.
GILBERT — Denver Stacy, Sr., of Gilbert, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, W.Va.
Born August 24, 1936, at Panther, W.Va., he was the son of the late Andy and Bertha (Harless) Stacy.
He was a charter member of the Isaban Baptist Church at Isaban, W.Va. He accepted the Lord in November of 1949. He remained a pillar of the church throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Bertha Stacy; his sisters: Ruby (Oscar) Roberts and Clara Jean (Raymond) Birchfield; and his brother, Clyde Stacy.
Survivors include his bride of 52 years, Phyllis (Lester) Stacy; his son, Denver Dale Stacy, his pride and joy; his daughter-in-love, Lori Stacy, all of Gilbert; and his loving granddaughter, Jenna Lynne, his little squirrel of Morgantown; and a host of family and friends.
Denver was an encourager to young people and instilled to all of us to have a positive attitude. He attended Iaeger High School and McDowell County Vocational School where he excelled in Engineering. He was in the coal mining business with his life-long friend, the late Charles Icenhour, with I & S Coal Company; Spring Branch Coal Company, and South Fork Resources. He was involved in mining operations in West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. He also worked at River Ridge Coal Company and later retired from Pittston Coal Company. He was also a great asset to his son’s many businesses. He was an auxiliary member of the Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department and past member of the Gilbert Kiwanis Club.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel in Gilbert, on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Jackie Lester and Mason Perry. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby Heights, Pecks Mill.
Pallbearers will be: Robert Trent, Joe Birchfield, Zimri Stokley, Steve Roberts, Brian Roberts, Jody Shannon, Donnie Ray Stacy, and Carl Waugh. Ronald Jackson “Jack” Wall
PRINCETON — Ronald J. “Jack” Wall, 74, of 601 Kirby Ave. in Princeton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born in Glen Lyn, Va., he was the son of the late Luther W. and Edith Smith Wall. He was retired from U.S. Steel Gary Mines. Jack was a graduate of Princeton High School and a member of the United Mine Workers. He was a charter member of Kee Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Sue Hunter Wall of Princeton; one daughter, Tina Marie Grose and her husband Jeff of Athens; three grandsons, Garin Grose, Brandon Grose and Tanner Grose; one sister, Bevadell Blankenship and her husband Charlie of Princeton and two brothers, Jim Wall and his wife Irma of Bozoo, W.Va. and Norman Wall and his wife Linda of Princeton.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.
Friends may call at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday (today).
