Deaths
Mr. Harold Linkous Goodman, 73, of Pounding Mill, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2008. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va.
Terence Courtney Martin, of Bland, Va., died Saturday, March 29, 2008. Arrangements by Bland Funeral Chapel, Bland.
Lila Jane Payne, 73, of Panther, died Friday, March 28, 2008 in a nursing home at Phelph, Ky. Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Arch Edgar Stevens, 76, of Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, Va., died Thursday, March 27, 2008 in a Bristol, Tenn. hospital following a lengthy illness. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
Ronald J. “Jack” Wall, 74, of 601 Kirby Ave., Princeton, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton.

Larry Wayne Akers
PETERSTOWN — Larry Wayne Akers, age 50, of Peterstown, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008 at his home.
Born March 22, 1958 at Lindside, W.Va., he was the son of James Heyward and Nellie F. Hall Akers of Cashmere, W.Va. He was formerly employed with A.R. Neely Construction, and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Heyward Akers.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Amanda and Miranda Akers of Pembroke, Va.; one brother, David Akers and wife Patricia of Cashmere, W.Va.; three sisters, Leta Dunn and fiancι Greg Bradley of Dublin, Va., Nita Thomas and fiancι Jeff Shorter of Peterstown, W.Va., and Brenda Lee Lafferty and husband Randy of Bluefield, W.Va.; aunt and uncle, Debbie and John Webber of Snowville, Va.; great-uncle, Bill Faulkner of Cashmere, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday (today), March 30, 2008 at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, W.Va., with the Rev. Daymond Snuffer officiating. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until time of services.

Walker Miles Goad
FLAT TOP — Walker Miles Goad, 85, of 178 Caribou Lane in Flat Top, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born July 23, 1922 in Prarie City, Ill., he was the son of the late James Walker and Nellie Silvertooth Goad. He retired as a Captain from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service. He served his country in World War II, Korea War and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Lilly Grove Baptist Church in Princeton. He was a retired minister serving in several churches from 1963 - 2006. The last 10 years of his ministry were spent serving Calvary Baptist Church in War, W.Va. He was formerly active in the War Kiwanis Club and was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 27 years serving as Scout Master and instructor. He lived in Flat Top since 2006 moving there from War.
One son, Walker M. Goad, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Faith Mack Goad of Flat Top; one son, James M. “Jim” Goad and his wife Carla of Flat Top and three grandchildren, James Conway, Richard Goad and Carrie Goad.
In keeping with his wishes, the body has been cremated. Memorial services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at the Lilly Grove Baptist Church in Princeton with the Rev. Bruce Woodson officiating.

Ruby Mae W. Hanson
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Ruby Mae W. Hanson, age 96, of Christiansburg, Va., formerly of Squire, W.Va., and Washington, D.C., went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 28, 2008 in a Salem, Va. adult care facility.
She was born in Midland, Ark., on November 23, 1911, the daughter of the late William and Moretta Avalon Glidewell Whelchel. She was happiest when sharing her life with her grandchildren. She loved to treat them to home-cooked meals when they were in school at Virginia Tech and Radford University. She also enjoyed traveling with family and her many friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Herbert Hanson, Sr.; one son, Dan H. Hanson, Jr.; three brothers, Olan, Othel, and Dale Whelchel; two sisters, Elzie Null and Juanita Strawn; two grandchildren, Tim Harlow and Lisa Harlow Ricker; a dedicated son-in-law, Shannon Harlow.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Hanson Harlow of Rocky Mount, Va., and Mary Ellen McGraw and husband, Eddie of North Tazewell, Va.; one son, Wayne Hanson and wife, Christy of Haddock, Ga.; grandchildren who were devoted to their “Granny” are Steven McGraw and wife, Sharon of Chattanooga, Tenn., Derek McGraw and wife, Debbie of Franklin, Tenn., Dwayne McGraw and wife, Tanya of Des Moines, Iowa, Meredith McGraw Pennington and husband, Jim of Savannah, Ga., Rodney Hanson, Sharon Hanson, Dana Steele, all of Princeton, W.Va., Scott Hanson of Roanoke, Va., Keith Hanson of Kingsport, Tenn., Wendy Moore of Huntsville, Ala., Marissa Ivey of Columbus, Ga., and a special great-granddaughter, Meghan Montross Harlow of Rocky Mount, Va. Very significant in her life were a wonderful, devoted nurse and friend, Mary Jane Wall of Salem, Va., formerly of Tazewell, Va.; her loving and committed niece, Willeta Strawn Lingle of Tulsa, Okla., and nephew, Wayne Null of Oklahoma City, Okla.; twenty great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. from 11:00 a.m. till 12:00 noon, Monday, March 31, 2008, where funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon with the Rev. Kathie Wilson-Parker of Main Street United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Mable Juanita (Toler) Sowards
SIMON — Mable Juanita (Toler) Sowards, 65, of P.O. Box 92, Simon, WV 24882, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W.Va.
Born August 28, 1942 in the Neds Branch section of Gilbert, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Morris H. and Ocie (Mills) Toler. She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Venus Sowards; one brother, Garland Toler; and one sister, Correna Perdue.
Survivors: Three brothers: Raymond “Pete” Toler and Randall Toler both of Justice, W.Va., and Donald Toler of Middleville, Mich.; three sisters: Oma Vance of Pennbroke, Va., Emma Jean Walker of Gilbert, W.Va., Millie Perry of Justice, W.Va.; two stepchildren: Peggy (Posey) Morgan and Patty (John) Quisenberry; a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, W.Va. with the Rev. Diamond Carter and the Rev. Lowell Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Davis Cemetery, Justice, W.Va.
Pallbearers: Ron Gupton, Kevin Dunbar, and family members and friends. Honorary pallbearers: Clayton Meade, Leonard Cresong, Joe Morgan, and Seth Kennedy.

Billy Randolph Umbarger Sr.
CHILHOWIE, Va. — Billy Randolph Umbarger, Sr., 74, of Chilhowie and formerly of Bastian, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 2008 at Johnson City, Tennessee Medical Center.
He was born April 28, 1933 at Sharon Springs, Va., and was predeceased by his parents, Henry Harlo and Evelyn Irene Layne Umbarger; his first wife, Bonnie Ann Cassell Umbarger; brothers, Everett and Jack Umbarger; sister, Naomi Newberry.
He was a member of the Quarry United Methodist Church at Saltville, Va. and was a retired correctional officer from the Bland Correctional Center with 25 years service.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy H. Umbarger, Chilhowie; one daughter and son-in-law, Deloras and C.D. Gregory, Bastian; three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy (Randy) Jr. and Phyllis Umbarger, Bland; Tommy R. and Karen Umbarger, Bastian; Gerald W. Umbarger, Bastian; five grandchildren, James Allen Umbarger, Sarah Mae Wells, Christopher Mark Gregory, Bethany Leigh'an Gregory, Jonathan Travis Umbarger; five great-grandchildren, Savanah Langley, Grace K. Umbarger, James Umbarger, Jr., Emma Bradley Wells, Marion Paige Wells; three sisters, Dorothy Wright, Bland, Hope Pennington, Dade City, Fla., Lois Burdette, Germantown, Md.; two brothers-in-law, James G. Cassell, Deland, Fla., Roger Burdette, Germantown, Md.; one stepson, Sammy R. McClure, Jr., Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh, the Rev. Alan Ashworth and the Rev. Joe Roe officiating. Burial in the Morning Star Cemetery, Bland.
The visitation will be at the Bastian Union Church on Sunday (today) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
