Herbert Thomas Bandy

BANDY, Va. — Herbert Thomas Bandy, age 84, of Bandy, Va., passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Heritage Hall in Tazewell, Va.

Born March 16, 1924 in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Newt P. and Maude Creed Bandy. He was a United States Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. He was a deacon and member of Middle Creek Advent Christian Church of Cedar Bluff, Va.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter, Lisa Ann Byrd; and nine brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Margaret Harper Bandy; six daughters, Florence Cerenda Berry and husband, James of Roanoke, Ethel Gibson and husband, Jerry of Roanoke, Margaret G. James and husband, Ronald of Wardell, Pauline Dowdy and husband, Jack of Bandy, Anna Lord and husband, Donald of Paint Lick, Josephine Ball and husband, Gary of Road Ridge; two sons, Herbert Clyde (Buck) Bandy and wife, Doshie of Bandy, William “Bill” Bandy and wife, Jackie of Baptist Valley; two sisters, Eliza Sparks of Bandy and Uvia Sparks of Rt. 1, Cedar Bluff; three sisters-in-law, Pauline Bandy of Bandy, Pansy Bandy of Richlands and Darlious Bandy of Mansfield, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Monroe Harper of Lake Charles, La.; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, nine step grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the staff and residents of Heritage Hall at Tazewell where he had spent the last 14 months.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with Brother Danny Starling and Brother Roy Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in the Argabright-Bandy Cemetery in Sinking Waters at Bandy, Va. Pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military memorial rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m., (today) Wednesday at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va.

James Franklin “Jimmy” Hatcher

PRINCETON — James Franklin “Jimmy” Hatcher, 68, of Thornton Avenue, Princeton, died suddenly Monday, March 24, 2008 at his residence.

Born July 6, 1939, in Princeton, he was the son of the late John W. and Opal Cooper Hatcher.

Jimmy was a graduate of Princeton High School and of the Baptist Faith. Jimmy’s love of life was his music; he started playing the piano at the early age of six. His mentor and person having a great influence in his life for the appreciation of music was Ms. Frances Moody. All throughout school he played the piano for various groups and early on in life, played for several different organizations in Bluefield and the surrounding area. For more than 13 years, Jimmy was a professional pianist in the Tidewater, Chesapeake and Norfolk area. He served as the substitute pianist for the South Side Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Va. Upon his return to Princeton, he was the primary caregiver for his parents and his brother Huling Hatcher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John W. Hatcher Jr., Billy Sunday Hatcher, Charles Basil Hatcher, Huling Horton Hatcher and John Pershing Hatcher.

Survivors include two sisters; June Hatcher Hogan of Princeton, Joann Hatcher Ross and husband Bill of Chesapeake, Va.; sister-in-law, Nancy Hatcher of Kannapolis, N.C.; cousin, Jake Hatcher of Princeton; and a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Delano Cates and Jerry Wizon.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Norm Arrington officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton.

Raymond Oley Mangus Sr.

LEESBURG, Fla. — Raymond Oley Mangus Sr., passed away March 14, 2008, in Leesburg, Fla.

Raymond was born in McComas, W.Va, December 1, 1917. A graduate of Northfork High School, Northfork, W.Va., he received the B.S. Degree in Education from Ohio University. Raymond worked for Pocahontas Fuel Company in Virginia for 20 years, taught school in Chillicothe, Ohio, retiring from Goodyear Atomic Corporation in Ohio.

He was a member of the Waverly, Ohio, Methodist Church. A tail gunner in a B-24 “Liberator” during WWII, he flew 26 missions over Germany. Mr. Mangus was a descendant of an old pioneer family in West Virginia, several of whom had fought in the American Revolution.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life his wife of 53 years, Ruth Hawthorne Mangus; parents Nolan Bernard and Iva Mae Mangus; brother, Melvin Carl Mangus; sister, Louise Elizabeth Ferrell and husband Charles; sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Mangus; mother-in-law, Donna Isadora Hawthorne and sister-in-law, Madeline Hawthorne Barker and his Hawthorne brothers-in law, James, George, Harry (Athlene), Lawrence (Helen), and Glen.

Survived by son Raymond Oley Mangus Jr. (Maxine) of Leesburg, Fla.; daughter, Donna Mangus Burton (Donald) of Lenoir City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Leah Marie Unger (Jason), Matthew Morgan Mangus, of Ohio; Christina Lynn Royster (John), Zane Alan Rhoads of Tennessee, and Davis Louis Rhoads of North Carolina; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother Nolan B. Mangus, Jr., of Bluefield, Va.; brother-in-law, Silas Barker of Louisiana; sister-in-law, Hallie L. Mangus of Princeton, W.Va; many nieces and nephews; special friend Mrs. Anna Lee Thornton of Richmond, Va.

Hattie Hill Rigney

MONETA, Va. — Hattie Hill Rigney, 91, of Moneta, Va. formerly of Salem and originally of Bramwell, W.Va. passed away Monday, March 24, 2008.

She was born January 14, 1917 in Mercer County, W.Va., daughter of the late Wiley M. and Blanche Williamson Hill.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Albert Rigney, daughter; Ann Hill Rigney; granddaughter, Deede Grace; one sister, Hilda Johnson and four brothers, Hampton, Herman, Harold and Howell Hill.

Mrs. Rigney was a homemaker, a longtime member of Bramwell Presbyterian Church, and was a charter member of Glenvar Creative Homemakers Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay Grace; grandson, Michael Grace; sister, Dorothy James; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem with Dr. Jan Fuller officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Rigney’s name to Bramwell Presbyterian Church, Bramwell, WV or to the Arthritis Foundation.

Carl Jefferson Ruth

NEW MARKET, Tenn. — Carl Jefferson Ruth, age 73, of New Market, Tenn., passed away peacefully to be with Jesus on March 23, 2008 with family members at his side.

He was a former foreman with Ruth Construction Company, a retired heavy equipment operator, and a Mason. He enjoyed fishing and having a good backyard grilled steak. He was a family man who put God first in his life.

He was preceded in death by father, A. J. Ruth of Fort Myers, Fla., and mother, Grace Emily Terry Ruth Stewart of Owenton, Ky.

Survived by wife of 53 years, Janet E. Ruth of New Market, Tenn.; sons, Dane and wife, Olena Ruth of Denver, Colo., and Gary and wife, Tina Ruth of Princeton, W.Va.; grandson, Alec Jefferson Ruth of Princeton, W.Va.; brothers, Sonny and wife, Valerie Bennett of Frankfort, Ky., William E. Ruth and wife, Rowena of Knoxville, Tenn., Steve Stewart of Owenton, Ky.; sisters, Judy and husband, Chuck Picklesiemer of Owenton, Ky., Georgia and husband, Sam Stewart of Georgetown, Ky., Carolina Stewart of Arizona, Mary Stewart of Worthville, Ky., Sue Ruth of Florida; many nieces, nephews, friends, and a multitude of brothers and sisters in Christ.

A celebration of eternal life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at New Vision Ministries in White Pine, Tenn., with Pastor Tony Collins officiating. Graveside inurnment service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2008 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Owenton, Ky.

Clyde Sidney Shires

BLUEFIELD — Clyde Sidney Shires, age 84, of Green Valley, Bluefield, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2008 at a Bluefield hospital.

Born on December 27, 1923 at Gap Mills, W.Va., he was a son of the late Lannie G. and Eula Kountz Shires.

He was a member of the Greenview United Methodist Church. Through the years he served in many positions including working with the youth and teaching the Adult Bible class for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with active duty in the southwest pacific. He was a graduate of Gap Mills High School and Coyne Electric School in Chicago. He was an employee of West Virginia Armature Co. and retired from Joy Manufacturing in 1988. He was past president of Local No. 647 Industrial Union Electrical Workers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Edith Shires, Pauline White, Elizabeth Arthur and Eva Mitchell.

Survivors include wife of 60 years, Opal Persinger Shires of the home; sons, Stephen Shires of Kernersville, N.C., Scott Shires of Bluefield; grandson, Larry Shires of Kernersville, N.C.; sisters, Ethel Lamanca of Roanoke, Va., Isabel Thomas of Roanoke, Va.; two nieces and several nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted (today) Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with the Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Norman Riley, Ronnie Louthan, Don Surface, Harold Catron, Don Wood and Gerald Steele will serve as pallbearers. The WV Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council will conduct military graveside services.

Friends may call (today) Wednesday from noon-1 p.m. at the funeral home.

William Ray (Butch) Stacy

HURLEY, Va. — William Ray (Butch) Stacy, 45 years of age, of Hurley, Va., passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Buchanan General Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Elkton, Md., he was the son of Jeanette Michael Stacy, Hurley, Va., and the late William Clifford Stacy. He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was of the Protestant Faith. Mr. Stacy was a 1981 graduate of Hurley High School and was a disabled Construction Worker.

Mr. Stacy is survived by his fiancι, Pamela Anders of London, Ky.; stepmother, Mary Jane Viers Stacy of Rt. 1, Grundy, Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth and husband Kenneth Horton of Swords Creek, Va., Brenda and husband Elwood Shockley of Newark, Del.; one brother, Lowell Lee Shortt of Michigan. He is also survived by five nieces, Rachael Horton, Kelly Shockley, Sarah Shortt, Jessica Shortt and Kristen Shortt, and three nephews, Jacob Horton, Mark Shortt and Ben Shortt.

He was also preceded in death by one niece, Lisa Johnson.

Funeral services for William Ray (Butch) Stacy, will be conducted Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Davis officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services at 7 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Horton, Tony Hess, Tommy Joe Adkins, Kenny Estep, Gene Lucado, Burton Vanover Jr., Jason Michael and Jamie Michael.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Mounts, David Shelton, Timothy Hensley, Dexter Dotson and Farley Michael.
