• Herbert Thomas Bandy, 84, of Bandy, Va., died Sunday, March 23, 2008 in a Tazewell, Va., health care facility. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff, Va.

• Angeliki Cameras Billos, 94, of Columbus, Ohio, died Thursday, March 20, 2008. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Browning

LASHMEET — Curtis Browning 47, of Lashmeet passed away March 22, 2008.

Curtis is survived by his mother Carolyn Shrewsbury and stepfather of 38 years Ron Shrewsbury of Bicknal Flats; a brother, James Browning and his wife Kandice of Princeton; a sister, Sandra Browning of Sterling, Va.; his Aunts, Eunice Dillon of Lashmeet and Virginia Irvin of Laurens, S.C.; his cousins Joel Dillon of Rock, Threasa Dillon of Lashmeet, Thomas Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla., Sarah Cheek of Laurens, S.C., Becky Smith of Columbia, S.C.

He is preceded in death by his father Walter Browning; his grandparents, Essie and Sadie Bailey; his uncles, Deward Dillon and Hoover Bailey; his cousins, Cherry Bailey and Cal Cheek.

A private memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton for friends of the family.

The family requests donations to drug prevention and/or recovery charities in lieu of flowers.

Clarence Jack Johnson

NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — Clarence Jack Johnson, 75, of 3943 Wittens Mill Rd., North Tazewell, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Maben, and was a son of the late Headley Johnson and Alice Laing Johnson.

Jack was retired from Thistle Foundry and Machine Co. in Bluefield, Va., and attended the Tip Top Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Roy Johnson, Sidney Johnson, Hobert Johnson, Fred Johnson and Grayson Johnson; and a sister Lexie Johnson.

He is survived by brothers, Adrian Johnson and wife Mae of North Tazewell, Delbert Johnson and wife, Sylvia of Princeton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Howard Hutchins officiating. Burial will follow at a cemetery near his residence on Wittens Mill Road, North Tazewell. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Garnet Grady Hess

DORAN, Va. — Garnet Grady Hess, age 78 of Doran, Va., passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008 in the VA Medical Center of Salem, Va. He had fought a long battle with Muscular Dystrophy and War related injuries.

Born January 14, 1930 in Raven, Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Eva Hess.

He was a Disabled Veteran of the U.S. Army having fought in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of The American Legion, The Disabled American Veterans Association and Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Glynward Hess and one sister, Viola Coleman.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Mae Eiklor Hess; one son, Gary Robert Hess and wife, Michelle of Richlands; one daughter, Teresa Ann Dye and husband, Larry of Cedar Bluff; five grandchildren, Melisha Darnell and husband W.C., Cynthia Mullins and husband Keith, Christi Altizer and husband J.J., Lorie Toracca and husband Alberto and Chelsea Campbell; great-grandchildren, Courtnie Hagy, Dakota Dye, Regan Mitchell, Carson Darnell, Colton Mullins, Caden Toracca and Jaylyn Altizer; special friends and family, Sonny (Boots) Ratliff, Rita Jean Shelton, Ted Coleman and Draxie Elswick.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Phillip Horton and the Rev. Kenny Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Newberry Cemetery at Horton Ridge, Va. Pallbearers will be members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.

Elizabeth Griffith McClanahan

GRUNDY, Va. — Elizabeth Griffith McClanahan, 75 years of age, of Grundy, Va., went to be with our Heavenly Father, Sunday, March 23, 2008 at her home following a brief illness.

Born in McDowell County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Wiley B. and Christina Day Griffith. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life, a member of Crossview Church of Christ and sang in the Grundy Church of Christ Choir. Mrs. McClanahan graduated from Mountain Mission School Class of 1951 and from the Chicago School of Interior Decorating and Design. She received her certificate from the Buchanan County Vocational School in carpentry, worked at Mountain Mission School for more than 30 years as a receptionist, taught home economics and carpentry.

Elizabeth retired as Assistant Director at the Buchanan County Department of Social Services. She designed and constructed clothing and had a patent on her necktie skirts and vests and loved refinishing antique furniture with her son. She was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for several years as an assistant den mother serving under Kathleen Penn and Mary McGlothlin. She also received the Eagle Scout Mother’s Pin award.

She was also preceded in death by nine sisters.

She is survived by one son, James Ragus McClanahan Jr., and wife Yolanda Harriet of Grundy; one granddaughter, Della Elizabeth “Liza” McClanahan-Bell and husband Noah of Fort Polk, La.; one grandson, James Ragus McClanahan III and wife Suzannie of Grundy; three sisters, Eva Stoyer of Winter Haven, Fla., Eonia Church and husband Jim of Homosassa, Fla.; Earley Joy Keyon and husband Mel of Lebadon, Ind. Also survived by one great-granddaughter on the way: Malay Kinzlei McClanahan-Bell, due on May 5, 2008; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Griffith McClanahan will be conducted Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Dennis Wimmer and Evg. Hobert Kennedy officiating with burial to follow in the Noah Stewart Cemetery, State Line Ridge No. 2, near Paynesville, W.Va.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services at 7 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be Ray Collins, Curtis Ragus Mullins Sr., James Ragus McClanahan III, Ryan Mullins, James O’Quinn, Johnny Dalton, William Dickey, Hank Blankenship, Clark Kennedy Jr., Jeff Burks, Teddy Keen and Phillip Justice.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tamara Dalton, Frannie Baxter-Minton, Agnes Mullins, T.C. Mullins Jr., Dr. Clinton Sutherland, Dennis Johnson, Terry Watts, Mel Kenyon, Jim Church, Julian Smith, Marlene Back, Elizabeth McCoy, Mickey McGlothlin, Dr. Thomas McDonald, Wanda Mullins, Zolina Elswick, David Epling, Thomas David McDonald Jr., Thomas Dingus and Curtis Ragus Mullins, Jr.

Mrs. Brenda Sue Perkins

RICHLANDS, Va. — Mrs. Brenda Sue Perkins, age 62,a of Richlands, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008 at her home.

Born September 18, 1945 in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Virginia Richardson Plaster. A resident of Tazewell County, Va., she was a member of the First Assembly of God.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Perkins of the home; two sons, Bobby Boyd and wife, Cissy of Sanford, N.C. and Timothy Boyd and wife, Amy of Lebanon; three grandsons, Michael and Jody Canady of Sanford, N.C and Michael Boyd of Lebanon; one great-grandson, Jacob Canady of Sanford, N.C.; one sister, Ruby Whited and husband, Willard of Raven; three brothers, Larry Plaster and wife, Tammy of Rosedale, Jerry Plaster and David Plaster both of Swords Creek; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with Pastor Buddy Herald officiating. Burial will follow in the Plaster Cemetery at Pine Creek, Va. Pallbearers will be Jackie Richardson, John Reedy, Pete Crawford, Steve Martin, J.R. Vandyke and Marcus Sizemore. Bernard L. Shrader

MATOAKA — Bernard L. Shrader, 85, of Matoaka, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born September 24, 1922 at Matoaka, he was the son of the late Charles Sutton Shrader and Mary Alice Calfee Shrader.

Mr. Shrader was retired from Eastern Coal Company with 37 years of service and was a member of UMWA. He enjoyed horses and buggy and wagon rides for children. He attended Mary’s Branch Pentecostal Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Nola McKinney Shrader; five brothers, infant Shoolen S. Shrader, Augustas Shrader, Coby Shrader, Harry Shrader and Olen Shrader; and two sisters, Marie Jenkins and Violet Jennings.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Della Hester Shrader; two sons, Jerry Shrader and his wife Nancy of Matoaka and Lanny Shrader and his wife Alta of Shawnee Lake; two daughters, Linda Moore and her husband Sam and Brenda Austin and her husband Rite, all of Bluefield, Va.; two brothers, Bobby Shrader and his wife Devela of Princeton and Tom Shrader and his wife Edna of Tennessee; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one special granddaughter, Carlie Hester.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Greg Hatfield and the Rev. Paul Lusk, officiating. The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at the Shrader Family Cemetery on Hilltop Farm Rd. on Rt. 71 in Matoaka. Bernard’s last mile to the cemetery will be by horse and wagon.

Serving as pallbearers will be Timothy Neel, Zack Quesenberry, Zane Quesenberry, Mark Mines and Shaun Pollard and Sam Moore.

Friends may call today from 5-7 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Those attending the graveside service may meet by 12 noon on Wednesday at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home or at the cemetery by 1 p.m.

Nancy Louellen Vest

PRINCETON — Nancy Louellen Vest, 61, of Charwood Avenue, Princeton (Glenwood), died early Monday morning, March 24, 2008, at her residence.

Born January 21, 1947, at Crab Orchard, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Virginia Mae Clowers Perdue.

Nancy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Johnson and Loretta Clemons; along with a brother, Glen Perdue.

Survivors: Her husband of 35 years, Basil Vest; three children, Beverly Goff and husband David, Pamela Tessa all of Princeton, Rodney Vest and wife Nancy of Morgantown; five grandchildren, Christopher Lindamood, Mark Tessa, Cody Goff, Gage Vest, Savannah Vest; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Lindamood, Andrew Tessa; and one sister, Gloria Jean Cox of Radford Va.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton.

Harless Williams

ROCKY GAP, Va. — Margaret “Peggy” Harless Williams, age 68, of Rocky Gap, Va., passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008.

She was born November 16, 1939 in Bland County, daughter of the late Marion and Elsie Tabor Harless.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Patty and Barbara and an infant grandson, Wyatt Colten Eli Bandy.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Diann and Richard Wentz, Kay and Reed Bandy; three sons and daughter-in-law, Rob Williams and fianc้e Patty Likens, Ken Williams, Jonathan and Kim Williams; grandchildren, Carl and Emily, Emily, James, Josh, Morgan, Tanner, Makenna, Karlee, Jaxon and Tyler; brothers and sisters, Doug and Barbara Harless, Skid and Maggie Harless, David and MaryDee Harless, Judy and Sam Cimino. Many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces also survive.

Funeral services will be held (today) Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Bland Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Blessing officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Harless Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of choice.
