Stella Hicks Artis
NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — Stella Hicks Artis, 69, of the Baptist Valley community of North Tazewell, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at her home.
Born March 15, 1937 in the Mountain Fork section of McDowell County, she was a daughter of the late Glen and Mandy Hicks Baker. She lived most of her life in War until moving to Baptist Valley where she has lived since 1981. Stella was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Artis; three sisters, Hattie Baker, Madrey Pierce, and Pricey Baker; five brothers, Johnny Baker, Beryl Baker, Earl Baker, Walker Baker and one infant brother.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Pam) Hankins and her dear husband, Keith (who was like a son to Stella), of St. Jacob, Ill., and Charlotte (Char) Deskins and husband, Tom, of Virginia; one sister, Pearly Rasnake of Conover, N.C.; one brother, Arnold Baker of Dallas, N.C.; two grandsons, Nathaniel Ross Hankins and Daniel Lee Hankins; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Hubert Stanley and the Rev. Sammy Barnett officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.
Pallbearers will be J.L. Lambert Jr., Matthew Pennington, Josh Pennington, Roger Smith, Barry White, and Curtis Neel.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2007.
Mrs. Gwendolyn Mary Christian
RUTLEDGE, Tenn. — Mrs. Gwendolyn Mary Christian, 75, of Route 2, Box 236, Rutledge, formerly of Gary, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, in Tennessee.
Mrs. Christian was born on Oct. 4, 1931 in Ream to the late Clifford Dillon and Adele Dillon. She was a member of the Methodist church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John (Tag) Christian; one son, John Wesley Christian; and a brother, Corbin Dillon.
Survivors include two sons, Sam Christian and wife Jenny of Hueytown, Ala., Cliff Christian and wife Ruth of Rutledge; one daughter, Susan Presley and husband Chris of Princeton; grandchildren, Eric, Brad, Brian and Jeremy Christian, Chris and Nick Presley, Amy and John Christian.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the Rev. Orville Harvey officiating the service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.
Friends and family may call at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., two hours before the service.
Mrs. Christian's grandsons will be serving as pallbearers.

Charles E. Cox
BRISTOL, Va. — Charles E. Cox, 73, formerly of Bristol, Va., departed this life Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Northside Hospital, Johnson City, Tenn.
He was born on July 21, 1933 in Wilcoe and was a son of the late Rev. A. J. Cox and Emma Presley Cox. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Lucille Cordle, Geneva Cox, Edith Cox and Mava Cox; four brothers, Renick Cox, Orville Cox, Carson Cox and Paul Cox.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and retired from the Kroger Company as the meat department manager with over 30 years of service. Mr. Cox was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Charles S. “Chuck” Cox and wife, Tammy, of Cary, N.C.; two granddaughters, Kelly Cox of New York, N.Y., and Jessica Cox of Bristol, Va.; one great granddaughter, Zoey Hughes of Bristol, Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth Trivett of Charlotte, N.C., Gladys O’Brien of Roanoke, Va., and Ruth White of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Titus A. Cox of Bluefield, Va., and Robert Cox of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews; and former wife, Nancy Cox of Bristol, Va.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2007, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Austin Cook and Pastor James W. Norris officiating. Eulogy will be given by Harrell Erwin. The committal will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at the graveside in the Abbs Valley Church of God Cemetery, Abbs Valley, Va.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harrell Erwin, Paul Cox, Ty Cox, Steve Hedrick, Grady Hedrick and the employees of Kroger Company.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2007, at Akard Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.

Mr. Jacob Hicks
ABINGDON, Va. — Mr. Jacob Hicks, 78, a resident of Abingdon, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Oct. 16, 1928 in the Mountain Fork Community in McDowell County. He was the son of the late Rueben and Lily Tennessee Hicks. Jacob Hicks went to work at the age of 13 in local sawmills, as a truck driver and in the furniture factories of Pulaski County, Va. He was a Christian with a strong faith in God whom he always referred to as “My Spiritual Father.” He enjoyed the great outdoors and cherished all living things. His CB buddies knew him by the handle “Silver Eagle.” He lived most of his life in War. For the past year he had made his home at Westhaven Retirement Living in Abingdon.
Survivors include two daughters and sons in law, Tom and Charlotte Deskins of Abingdon, Keith and Pamela Hankins, their children, Nathanial Hankins and Daniel Hankins, all of St. Jacob, Ill.; one brother, William Lenville Hicks of Cleveland, Ohio; one sister, Lucille Heilman of Cleveland; many beloved nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Jacob Hicks will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 5, 2007, at Frost Funeral Home Chapel in Abingdon with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Pounding Mill, Va.

Louise S. Hunter
BLUEFIELD — Louise S. Hunter, 86, of 2820 Grandview Ave., Bluefield, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at her home following a long illness.
Born March 24, 1920 in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Lacy M. and Grace Maddy Saunders.
Louise was a retired beautician having worked for 43 years. She was the owner of Louise’s House of Beauty in Bluefield. She was a member of Bland Street Methodist Church in Bluefield.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles J., Fred and George Saunders.
Survivors include a daughter, Bobbi Hunter and husband David McCue Kersey of Bluefield; two sisters, Virginia Saunders Kammer and husband Max of Bluefield, and Paris Ann Fisher of Peterstown; two grandchildren, David Nathaniel Kersey and Kristen Hunter Kersey; several nieces and nephews, including Harry Kammer of Bluefield, Alice Ann Brady of Bluefield and Annette Fisher Booher of Peterstown; caregivers, Libby Shrewsbury, Doris and Darlene Green.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with the Rev. Rick Duncan officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park Mausoleum in Hinton.

David Lamont
PRINCETON — David Lamont, 57, of 385 White Pines Road, Princeton, formerly of Bethel, Conn., died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born Nov. 10, 1949 in Montclair, N.J., he was the son of the late Kenneth Lamont and Hazel Reid Lamont of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Mr. Lamont was a 1967 graduate of James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, N.J. He was the owner of Lamont Tile Service for 37 years. He was an avid motorcyclist and auto racing enthusiast. He was of the Episcopal faith and was a loving husband and a very devoted father. He had been a resident of Princeton for one year and left many friends here and in Connecticut.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Lamont.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Kennedy Lamont of the home; one son, Sean Lamont and his wife Shannon of Princeton; one grandson, Tyler Lamont of Princeton; and one sister, Marie Lamont of Pompano Beach.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Terry Lambert officiating.

Roy Wayne Nunley
BLAND, Va. — Roy Wayne Nunley, 63, of Bland, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Charleston Medical Center. He was born March 6, 1943 in Tazewell, Va., son of the late Frank E. and Effie Bourne Nunley and was preceded in death by an infant sister. Roy enjoyed playing music, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia “Jenny” Nunley of the home; two sons, Roy Wayne “J.R.” Nunley Jr. and Frank Martin “Frankie” Nunley, both of Rocky Gap, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and David Taylor of Rocky Gap; two brothers and sister-in-law, Willie Eugene Nunley of Bland, and Harry Thomas and Carolyn Nunley of Hollybrook, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Larry Clark of Bland; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Bland Funeral Chapel, Bland, with Pastor Eddie Johnson officiating.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Va.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 p.m. until the service time.

Peggy Comins Tinder
BLUEFIELD — Peggy Comins Tinder, 79, of 2222 W. Cumberland Rd., Bluefield, formerly of Martinsville, Va., died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at home after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 24, 1927 in Nanticoke, Penn., and was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Ethel M. McCartney Comins of Bluefield. Ms. Tinder graduated from Beaver High School class of 1943, and then in 1947 received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her early years were spent in Bluefield where she was a past member of Trinity Methodist and Bland Street Methodist churches, and was also a past member of the Bluefield Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She later moved to Martinsville where she was an Assistant Professor of Business Education at Patrick Henry Community College and she retired from there in 1992 after 23 years of service. Ms. Tinder was a member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville for over 30 years and was active in Circle 5, the United Methodist Women, the Clothe-a-Child Foundation, and many Bible studies. She was a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, and an active volunteer in various community services in Martinsville including the Free Medical Clinic. Peggy was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs and the Book Exchange Club.
Surviving are her daughter, Betsy T. Cardwell and husband, Steve, of Rocky Gap, Va.; son, Frank C. Tinder and wife, Kim, of Bluefield, Va.; sister, Jean C. Mitchell of Martinsville; five grandchildren, S. Scott Cardwell of Pulaski, Va., Lindsey E. Cardwell of Rocky Gap, Christopher C. Tinder of Waikoloa, Hawaii, Douglas W. Tinder of Bluefield, Va., and Katherine M. Tinder of Columbia, S.C.; two nieces and a nephew; and many wonderful friends.
Memorial services will be conducted from First United Methodist Church in Martinsville on Feb. 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating.
