Grundy doesn’t have the depth it once had in the upper weight classes, but it showed its dominance Saturday in the lower half of the weight classes.
Grundy sent five wrestlers into the finals and came away with five individual champions and the Bobby Bates Classic team title at the UVa.-Wise Convocation Center.
Grundy topped second-place Lord Botetourt, 235-198.5 in the team standings.
The Golden Wave won five of the first six finals matches, starting with 106-pound freshman Maverick Coleman and ending with its two returning state champions, Justin Street (138 pounds) and Trey Smith (132). Also notching wins for Grundy were Austin Hurley (120) and Austin Compton (126).
Graham’s Dustin Hagerman won the 113-pound title. Caleb Lankford of Richlands also reached the finals and was the 145-pound runner-up.
Three other Golden Wave wrestlers placed third: Dylan Raines (152), Adam Hibbitts (220) and Jordan McCowan (182).
“We had some guys really step up in the wrestle backs,” said Grundy coach Travis Fiser, who said nearly half of his team was battling the flu. “Adam Hibbitts was a really nice surprise from last year, when he wrestled as a heavyweight. “Coming in third was just a huge boost for him and for Maverick Coleman to win. He gets better every week. That was a good opponent he had in the finals in Ty Boyd of Rural Retreat. (Maverick’s) got a lot of upside, he’s just got to keep working at it.”
Street, who was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Smith earned first-period pins. Compton won an 8-3 decision over Lebanon’s Peyton Watson in the finals.
Austin Hurley was leading Justin Peters when he got an ankle pick and took Wise Central’s Justin Peters to the mat and got a pin at the 3:42 mark in the 120-pound title match.
“I wrestled (Peters) early (this season) in a scrimmage,” said Hurley, who got his first tournament win of the season in two tries. “I knew what I could do with him and I knew how he wrestled.
“My shots were awful last week. I wasn’t in a good stance and I wasn’t getting my ankles right. This weekend I put it all together.” Dustin Hagerman pinned his way to the 113-pound championship bout and was in control in his finals match with Jacob Wynn when he pinned the Rural Retreat wrestler with 19 seconds remaining in the second period (3:41).
Graham finished fifth in the team standings, while Richlands finished 10th, the best showing by a Southwest District team.
Six Graham wrestlers placed fifth: Austin Miller (132), Hunter Cook (152), D. Maverick Cook (170), Robert Compton (195), Jon Jennings (220) and Everett Vest (285). Aaron Vest placed sixth at 182 pounds.
Levi Stroupe placed fourth (182) and Kyshon Lee (170) was sixth wrestling for the Graham “B” team.
Graham head coach Tim Woodward was pleased with the effort by the G-Men, in a conversation with the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.
“The kids wrestled great,” Woodward said. “It was quite an accomplishment for this team to go down to this large tournament and finish the way they did. Individually, it shows how hard they have worked to finish in the top eight in so many of their weight classes.”
Richlands had four place-winners, including Austin Lankford (3rd at 170), Wyatt Cantrell (4th at 120) and Marshall Barnes (6th at 132).
Tazewell placed two in the top eight: Garrett Jessee (4th at 220) and T.K. Ruble (8th at 138).
