Quinton McDuffie popped in 21 points and grabbed five rebounds to help lead the Chowan University Hawks to a 79-61 win over the WVU Tech Golden Bears, Friday night in the opening game of the 2012 Currence Classic at Ned Shott Gymnasium.
Chowan raced to an early six point lead and never looked back, leading 18-8 at the media timeout with just under 14 minutes to go in the opening half.
The Hawks lead grew to more than 20 points and they held a 46-24 halftime advantage.
The second half was more evenly contested as Tech outscored Chowan 37-33.
In addition to McDuffie’s 21, Rickey Lamb pumped in 18 points, cleared 11 rebounds and dished out six assists. Ashante Ross scored 14 with five assists and seven boards, and Kyree Bethel contributed 13 points, including three treys.
Terrale Clark led WVUT with 18 points. David Rawlinson tallied 16 with eight assists and Jaren Marino poured in 14. Marino had a team-high six rebounds and Komilous Donnell had three steals for the Golden Bears.
Chowan shot an amazing 10-of-22 from behind the three point arc, while WVU Tech connected on only three-of-19 from long distance. Chowan held the rebounding edge 39-30.
WVU Tech takes on Lander in today’s first game of the Currence Classic at 4 o’clock, while Chowan will face Bluefield State at 6 p.m.
