Three G-Men advance to state wrestling meet

Grundy pins Region D title, sends eight to states

RURAL RETREAT, Va. — Three Graham G-Men qualified for the upcoming state wrestling tournament on Saturday during the Region C tournament at Rural Retreat High School.

Dustin Hagerman (113 pound class) and Everett Vest (220) both finished second in their class, and Levi Stroupe (182) was fourth.

Three other Graham grapplers took fifth-place finishes, making them alternates for state competition. They are Shane Hudson (120), Robert Compton (195) and Colin Beavers (285).

As a team, Graham finished fifth out of 15 schools competing. James River won the tournament with 204.5 points and Rural Retreat was second with 199. Parry McCluer had 196, Chilhowie had 165.5, and Graham concluded with 125.

Among other Mountain Empire District schools, Galax finished eighth, Grayson County was 14th and Fort Chiswell was 16th.

The state wrestling tournament is Feb. 14-16 in Salem.


Region D

WISE, Va. — The Grundy Golden Wave left the Region D wrestling tournament on Saturday with eight regional champions and another dominating performance.

Grundy won the team competition at UVa-Wise with 243.5 points, 92 more than second place Wise Central.

Four Golden Wave wrestlers won their second straight Region D crowns — Austin Compton (126 pound class), Austin Hurley (120), Trey Smith (132) and Justin Street (138). Smith and Street both won state titles in 2012.

First-time champs were freshmen Maverick Coleman (106) and Elliott Pedigo (145), sophomore Cody Puckett (113) and junior Jordan McCowan (182).

Grundy had nine wrestlers in the finals overall, including Dylan Raines, who lost to three-time state champ Colby Dean of J.I. Burton.

Coach Travis Fiser’s squad is going after its second Group A crown in as many tries with 11 state qualifiers headed to the Salem Civic Center on Feb. 15-16. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the states.


Region IV

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Christiansburg dominated the Region IV wrestling meet on Saturday, winning six weight classes and finishing first with 223.5 points.

Abingdon was second with 162.5, followed by Tunstall (152.5), Cave Spring (139) and Martinsville (137.5).

Other Southwest District teams included Marion (10th place, 73 points), Carroll County (11th, 65), Richlands (13th, 51) and Tazewell (15th, 17).

No wrestlers from Richlands or Tazewell qualified for the Group AA state wrestling meet slated for next weekend in Salem.
