Cantrell picks up honors

PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Logan Cantrell has been known as a quiet and unselfish, but good player, around the Black Diamond District for a couple of years now.

He’s still quiet and a team player, but now he’s becoming known as one of the best players in the league.

A quiet nudge from his coach, Brian Moore, has made the Twin Valley senior more aggressive on the offensive end of the floor, and it’s paying off for the Panthers.

Cantrell scored 58 points and hauled in 22 rebounds in two games last week to earn Pocahontas Coal Association/Bluefield Daily Telegraph Player of the Week honors.

Cantrell insists it’s mostly been a matter of simply doing what his coach asked him to do.

“I’ve just been looking for my shot more,” said Cantrell, who posted game highs with 27 points and 14 rebounds and hit a go-ahead free throw with 6.1 seconds left in a Jan. 22 BDD victory at Council.

“Coach Moore has been encouraging me to shoot more to help the team. I’ve been working on my shot after practice, or any time I get a chance to get in the gym.”

The Panthers weren’t expected to do much this season, but they picked up their first Black Diamond District win at Council and own wins over both Virginia High and Richlands and a 7-9 overall record, despite losing one key starter after another to injury.

“Every time somebody goes down its just next man up,” Cantrell added.

Cantrell is still a quiet leader for the improving Panthers, but the important thing is, says Moore, he is a leader and a good one.

“The last two games Logan has really picked it up and started playing and becoming the leader we need him to be,” said Moore, after Cantrell scored a career-high 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the field in a Jan. 26 game at Haysi. “He’s trying to lead by example on the floor and the kids are responding to him.”
