Locals prep stars shine at college level

BLUEFIELD —  Bluefield product Craig Ponder is third in scoring for North Carolina-Wilmington, collecting 9.6 points per game for the Seahawks. Ponder has also contributed 33 assists, 10 steals and is connecting on 77.4 percent from the free throw line. Ponder, a redshirt freshman, has started in 15 of 20 games for UNC-W, which is 8-12 on the season and 3-5 in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

 Princeton product Tesla Akers scored 20 points to lead Ferrum College to a 96-44 win over Mary Baldwin last Saturday. Akers, a senior guard for the Panthers, is scoring 12.9 points per game, shooting 70.5 percent from the free throw line and 34.9 from 3-point range. She has also contributed 49 assists and 28 steals for Ferrum, which is 16-2 on the season and 10-1 in the USA South Athletic Conference.

 Bland County product Laurel Hankins tallied 10.1 points per game as a junior starter for the Roanoke Coillege Maroons, who are 8-11 with a 5-3 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Hankins is pulling down 4.1 rebounds a game and is connecting on 80 percent of her free throws attempts.
