Grundy holds off Cobras' comeback try

GRUNDY, Va. — Council finally found the range in the fourth quarter, blistering the nets for 32 points.

Unfortunately for the Cobras, Grundy found the range through the first three periods.

Grundy held off a wild comeback by Council for a 79-75 Black Diamond District win Monday night.

Dylan Billiter hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, when the Golden Wave built a double-digit lead it would keep until the final two-and-a-half minutes.

Billiter finished with a game-high 26 points as Grundy (2-14, 1-5) jumped out to a 40-25 half-time lead and led by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Baylen Dillow posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Charles McCoy contributed a rare triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Golden Wave maintained its huge advantage, 68-47, after two free throws by McCoy with 5:37 remaining.

“Dylan built the lead for us,” Grundy coach Jeremy Ratliff said. “We just have to learn to play with a lead.  “That’s something we just haven’t experienced much. But Council showed its senior leadership and good coaching to come back like they did in the fourth quarter.”

Josh Viers, Justin Mathis, Lucas Barton and Cameron Presley combined to hit seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to bring Council within one possession for the first time since the score was 2-0.

The Cobras (7-10, 3-4) never led, but got within 75-72 on two free throws by Mathis with 48 seconds remaining. It capped a 25-7 run.

“I thought our guys, especially Justin Mathis, stepped up and hit some big shots,” Council coach Patrick Wade said. “But we’ve got to develop a next-play mentality and value possessions as much in the first half we do when we’re behind in the second half.”

Mathis finished with 23 points and five assists, while Viers and Presley each scored 19 points for Council.

The Cobras did not react well in the first half to Grundy’s box-and-one defense on Viers, who scored 15 points after halftime. Coucil missed nine of its first 10 shots from the field.

“We wanted somebody other than Josh to hit shots for them, and they finally did in the fourth quarter,” Ratliff added.
