Richlands advances to tourney finals

BRISTOL, Va. — It will be Lebanon and Richlands in the finals of the Virginia High Tip-Off Classic tonight at 7 o’clock. The Pioneers rolled by Abingdon 55-35 in a winner’s bracket semifinal contest at the Bearcat Den.

In the nightcap, a battle between two undefeated teams, Richlands (5-0) advanced to the title contest with a 65-46 win over Chilhowie.

Richlands never trailed in the game, although Chilhowie (6-1) kept it close early. The Blues made their final three shots in the first quarter to go up 11-6. They began to pull away in the second quarter and held a 31-19 advantage at halftime.

“We have some stretches that we play well and some that when we don’t play very well,” said Richlands coach Dennis Palmer. “We had a little lull early in the second, but we came back played hard and put a little pressure on them.”

The Blues were very hard to defend on the perimeter. Brittany Allen tossed in 17 points to lead the way but Montana Hearl (13), Makenley Davis (13), and Cassie Richardson (11) were hard to handle outside and driving to the basket.

“We start four guards,” Palmer said. “We can press and get up and down the floor. It’s a key if we can pressure people and get some turnovers. We like to get a nine or 10 point lead and put some pressure on them to come back.”

The Warriors couldn’t get anything established in the second half. They had problems getting their shots to fall, never getting a consistent threat. Danielle Catron dropped in 13 points to take scoring honors for  Chilhowie.

“We shot poorly both halves, but we had some good looks,” Chilhowie coach Mark Halsey said. “The shots just weren’t falling tonight. But this is the fourth game in a row we’ve played. We put a lot of pressure on the girls and ask a lot of them, but they’ve responded well.”

Richlands will play Lebanon tonight for the title. Both teams are undefeated on the young season.

“Lebanon has a real good team,” said Palmer. “We’ll have to stop their 3-point games. We need to get some easy looks and get some easy baskets against them. We’ll have to play awfully well to beat them.”
