Bluefield's Eldridge, Graham Coach Woodward reach wrestling milestones

BLUEFIELD — The first Beaver Invitational wrestling competition concluded on Saturday with host Bluefield High School taking first place with a 5-0 mark for the day.

The Greenbrier West B team finished second, Midland Trail took third and Wyoming East was fourth. River View and Tazewell also competed.

Bluefield senior captain Brandon Eldridge earned his 100th career wrestling victory during the meet, a first in school history according to coach Ryan Rooney.

In addition to Eldridge, competing at 160 pounds, other Beavers who went 5-0 were Tyler Brooks (126 pounds), T.J. Pence (132), Shawn Pennington (195), Julius Thomas (220) and Cody Gore (285).

Beavers with 4-1 records were Scott Janson (126), Corey Bird (170), Danny Miller (182), Mark Sutton (195) and Mason Burton (285).

Rooney said the invitational could become an annual event.

The Beavers return to the mat next weekend in the Hardwood Duals at Webster County High School.

Graham finishes second

CHILHOWIE, Va. — Graham wrestling coach Tim Woodward recorded his 300th coaching win and his G-Men finished second on a tie-breaker Saturday in the Warrior Pride Duals wrestling meet, with a 4-1 record.

The G-Men defeated Princeton 72-12, Fort Chiswell 72-12, Lebanon 63-15 and George Wythe 54-39. Graham and Chilhowie were 42-42 in the championship round but the host school won on the tie-breaker.

George Wythe was third and Lebanon was fourth. Woodward’s landmark win came when Graham defeated Lebanon.

Dustin Hagerman of Graham (113 pounds) finished 5-0, all of the decisions being first-round pins. He also had the quickest pin of the tourney, an 11-second encounter.

Other 5-0 days came from Austin Miller (132), Hunter Cook (152), Dylan Cook (170) and Kyshon Lee (170). G-Men finishing 4-1 were Cody Proffitt (120), Jacob Evans (145), Robert Compton (195), Jon Jennings (220) and Everett Vest (285).

Tristan Evans (126) was 3-2 for the day. Aaron Vest (182) was 2-1 and Levi Stroupe (182) was 2-0.

Graham will compete on Dec. 14-15 at the Bobby Bates Classic in Wise, Va.
