GRUNDY, Va. —
Grundy started the season well with a win in the opening set, but did not finish well in a 3-1 loss to Clintwood in non-district volleyball action Tuesday night.
The Lady Golden Wave dropped a 25-23, 12-25, 8-25, 17-25 decision to the Lady Greenwave.
Kacie Owens had 22 assists and landed straight six straight serves to close out Grundy's game one win. Clintwood's combination of height and experience took over in the final three sets.
"We started out well, but we got down after they made a run," first-year Grundy coach Kasey Cantrell said. "We're so young and they have so much experience it was tough for us to come back."
Jordan Hodge had 12 service points and Lexie Elswick contributed 10 service points for Grundy.
Taylor Fleming was dominant at the net in the final two games and finished with 10 kills, while Bailey Robinson added eight kills for Clintwood in its second win in as many tries.
"We had some big sets and we have some big hitters," Clintwood coach Sarah Williams said. "We just can't afford to start matches slowly. We need to come out and start as well as we played at the finish."
Sarah Boyd's three kills paced Grundy. Elswick had two blocks.
Grundy travels to Tazewell on Thursday.
