Jays fall in Kingsport but hold onto first place

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Jeyckol De Leon’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning led the Kingsport Mets to a 7-6 Appalachian League win over the Bluefield Blue Jays in front of 975 on Wednesday night at Hunter Wright Stadium.

Despite the loss, Bluefield (40-25) maintained a 1/2 game lead over Pulaski (40-25) in the East Division after the Mariners lost 5-1 at Elizabethton.

Bluefield led 4-1 through six innings, with Chase De Jong allowing four hits, striking out five and surrendering an unearned run for the Blue Jays.

Kingsport ralied for five in the seventh off Clinton Hollon and Tim Mayza, with the help of three of the Blue Jays’ five errors in the field to build a 6-4 lead.

Franklin Barreto’s two run double in the top of the ninth scored D.J. Jones and Derrick Loveless to knot the score at 6-6 and force extra innings.

Kingsport scored the winning run in the 10th after Ruiz and McNeil each singled off Phil Kish, who intentionally walked Dominic Smith to load the bases. De Leon followed with a single to right field to score Ruiz.

Kingsport out-hit Bluefield 13-11, and also had four errors of its own.

Jorge Saez paced the Blue Jays with two doubles, while Matt Dean added a triple, single and drove in a run. Barreto drove in two runs and Loveless scored twice.

Jeff McNeil led all batters with four hits for Kingsport, while Yeixon Ruiz added two hits and scored two runs.

Both teams used five pitchers in the game. Robert Coles picked up the win for Kingsport, while Kish took the loss.

Kingsport (38-27), which is 3-1 in the last week against Bluefield, remains in first place in the West, a 1/2 game ahead of Greeneville. The Mets and the Astros have apparently clinched postseason berths.

These clubs will meet tonight at 7 p.m., and will conclude the regular season on Friday, also at 7.
