Pulaski rallies past Bluefield Blue Jays

BLUEFIELD — The “king of baseball” could not decree a different ending on Sunday evening at Bowen Field.

After a pregame ceremony honoring Bluefield Baseball Club President George McGonagle, his Blue Jays lost a 2-0 lead to the Pulaski Mariners and took a 5-2 defeat in the first game of a three-game set.

Matt Dean’s groundout in the first with the bases loaded brought D.J. Davis home with the game’s first score. Tim Locastro led off the third with a double to left, and Mitch Nay’s sacrifice fly scored him for a 2-0 advantage. That, however, would be Bluefield’s final run.

A new addition to the Bluefield roster, Clinton Hollon, got his first Appalachian League start. The Kentucky native had allowed no earned runs and just three hits in 12 innings in the Gulf Coast League before being promoted.

In his Appy League debut, he and the Jays defense retired six straight Mariners in one span. That stretch ended with Jeffrey Zimmerman’s double, followed by Wilton Martinez’ 10th home run of the season over left field in the fourth, tying the game.

In the next inning, the visitors drew three walks in the fifth off Hollon and reliever Adaric Kelly to load the bases. Two came home on Tyler Smith’s double, and Isaiah Yates tallied the final run on a wild pitch.

Hollon struck out five and allowed four hits, and was charged with four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Francisco Gracesqui gave up just one hit in handling the final two innings for Bluefield.

Pulaski reliever Luis Pina took the pitching win.

Locastro and Lydell Moseby both batted 2 for 4 for Bluefield, and Martinez and Aaron Barbosa were 2 for 4 for Pulaski.

The two teams battle again tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Bowen Field.
