Orioles split twinbill

BLUEFIELD — The Rath of the Bristol White Sox fell victim to a ninth inning rally by the Bluefield Orioles.

Two wild pitches by Bristol reliever Kevin Rath enabled to the Orioles to pull out a 3-2 win over the White Sox to earn a split of an Appalachian League doubleheader on Friday night at Bowen Field.

Bluefield lost the opener 2-1.

Javier Santana led off the seventh by reaching on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved up a base apiece on wild pitches by Rath. Brenden Webb actually struck out for the second out in the frame, but the ball eluded the catcher, allowing Santana to score the winning run.

Trailing 2-0 in the nightcap, the Orioles scored two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Edwin Cintron and a single from Santana.

Two Bluefield pitchers combined to allow just two hits, with Chris Petrini improving to 3-1 with the win. Jarret Martin struck out eight and walked four in four innings for the Orioles.

Bluefield had just four hits against four Bristol pitchers.

Rath dropped to 0-4 for Bristol.  

Both teams had five hits apiece in the opener, but Chase Blackwood drove in two runs with a double in the second, and that was enough for the White Sox.

Robert Young (2-3) allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings, while Terance Marin earned his first save.

Corey Thomas led Bluefield with two hits, including an RBI single to score Brenden Webb in the fourth.

Jacob Pettit was the tough-luck loser, dropping to 2-5, despite surrendering just five hits, striking out two and walking no one in a seven-inning complete game effort.

Bluefield will host Bristol tonight in what is Fireworks Night at Bowen Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
